Walker family finds fun in county fair harness racing
Howard Walker and his wife Edna raise Standardbreds on a St. Croix County farm with six horses while their grandchildren and family embrace county fair racing. They trained seven horses this year including a yearling mare and two Illinois boarders. 1980 Wisconsin and Minnesota pacer of the year Sonny Kirk and Stellar Almahurst, a multiple prior winner, highlight their history. The Walkers juggle farm life with training routines of long jogs and fast workouts, enjoying racing as relaxation after work with 150 to 200 workers nearby.

Walkers nurture pace horses and family racing tradition
The Walkers train pacers with son Todd and grandson Tim helping as grooms and whistlers. They jog two miles then add a mile weekly from spring thaw, peaking at six miles with fast work by early summer, continuing through September. They hope for a 1:55 mile and support county fair tracks.
