Keeping farmers farming is good business

Dean Leo Walsh of the UW Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences spoke at the Wisconsin Feed Seed and Farm Supply Association Convention about the farm financial crisis. He cited a Faribault Minnesota study showing 30 percent of farmers in difficulty and 10 percent likely to lose land, projecting multi‑million dollar losses to dealers, workers, bankers, and the local economy if Wisconsin loses 2,000 to 5,000 farmers in five years.

La Follette rules on flexible EAZ decertification authority

Wisconsin Land Conservation Board may revoke or rescind an exclusive agricultural zoning ordinance certification with changes to the underlying farmland preservation plan. Attorney General Bronson La Follette noted the certification process is ongoing and not static. The board seeks procedures for decertification amid farm foreclosures and recent ordinance changes in Shawano and Winnebago counties. A court ruled a farmland preservation agreement may not survive foreclosure, a decision praised as rational by Agriculture Secretary La Verne Ausman.
