Board weighs emergency irrigation limits amid drought impact

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board considers proposed emergency rules to allocate surface water for irrigation as drought reduces stream flows. Attendees heard that public rights outrank private rights and must be protected, with three application requirements detailed: form, a scaled property and stream map, and an attorney’s chain-of-title opinion.

Beef Referendum Registration Deadline Nears for Farmers

Area farmers must register by Friday to vote in the July Beef Referendum. Those who fail to register by the week will be ineligible to vote July 5 to 17. Registration and voting occur at local county ASCS offices. Eligible are farmers who sold or owned livestock in 1976. Prior rights to water in a drainage field are based on application date. Some new rules may require installation of water metering equipment for new applicants.

Karyn Nelson Crowned 1977 Alice in Dairyland

Karyn Suzanne Nelson, 21, was named the 1977 Alice in Dairyland at Wausau West High School after a field of 12 finalists. She receives the crown from outgoing Alice Janice Findlay, along with a mink stole and red roses, and will begin a year as a public relations employee for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. Nelson will attend the state FFA convention in Green Lake and undergo agriculture promotion training, delaying her student teaching internship in Rice Lake.
