Earl Butz to be sentenced June 19 on tax charge
Former U S agriculture secretary Earl Butz, 71, will be sentenced June 19 for failing to report 148,114 of his 1978 taxable income. Judge Jesse Eschbach will consider probation officer recommendations and any mitigating remarks from Butz. He pleaded guilty May 22 to the 1978 charge, with a 1977 income charge dropped. Wisconsin Holds Lead as National Dairy State in Year
Wisconsin remained the top dairy state last year as the Wisconsin Agricultural Reporting Service reported 1.5 billion pounds of cheese and 289 million pounds of butter from 425 dairies. The state produced over a quarter of national butter and more than a third of cheese, with top national rankings in milk, butter, and total cheese. The average Wisconsin dairy cow yielded 12 285 pounds of milk, while the herd average neared 500 000 pounds.
