Brown Swiss loan denial stirs debate on breed bias
A northern Wisconsin farmer’s request to buy eight registered Brown Swiss was vetoed by an FmHA loan officer who cited a preference for Holsteins and a policy against loans for registered dairy cattle. The anonymous farmer, “Mr. Smith,” defends the colored breed’s potential cash flow, while former FmHA specialist Francis Kuhls says the agency does not discriminate by breed and loans colored breeds when cash flow supports them.
