Bird-a-thon tops expectations with 155 species observed

The Wisconsin bird-a-thon at Green Bay and nearby islands yielded 155 species after a long day of field work. Participants besides UW Green Bay biologists and Fish and Wildlife staff spotted shorebirds like Hudsonian godwits and semipalmated sandpipers, nesting cattle egrets, snowy egrets, and diverse waterfowl while avoiding nesting disruption. The finale included a Henslow’s sparrow and a last nighthawk, raising the total to 155 and prompting memories of last year’s 132.
