The 500 acre Van Epern dairy operation in eastern Wisconsin hosts Farm Progress Days with 130 to 150 cows and a new double eight milking parlor. Visitors will tour the milking setup, calf housing, and demonstration crops while concerns grow about encroaching Kaukauna city limits on the historic Dutch area.
Dick and Helen Van Epern will host Farm Progress Days on their 500 acre dairy farm July 28 to 30. The event expands yearly with 521 exhibitors already booked and a waiting list of about three dozen, compared with 1969 and 25th show figures. UW Extension official Lynn Brooks notes a 30 percent increase over three years.
West central Wisconsin farmers are guided to Farm Progress Days at the Van Epern farm on U.S. Hwy 41 between Appleton and Green Bay with multiple routes from Eau Claire and other counties. The event runs July 28 to 30 with exhibits from UW Extension and demonstrations including milking, tiling, harvesting, a sludge nutrient plot, ultrasound pregnancy detection, and artificial insemination.
West central Wisconsin farmers planning a day trip to Farm Progress Days should arrange overnight stays in the Green Bay area as Eau Claire travelers face a four hour drive each way. With all Appleton and Kaukauna motels sold out, Outagamie County agent Russ Luckow lists three Hwy 41 options: Midway Motor Lodge Green Bay 414-499-3161, Holiday Inn Southwest 414-499-5121, Howard Johnsons DePere 414-336-0611.
