Care in Feeding Urea for Dairy Rations
Clark County farmers weigh using urea to supply nitrogen in dairy rations. Urea is not a protein and has no food value, but in high energy rations rumen microbes can convert its nitrogen into protein. Start small, allow 2–3 weeks for adaptation, and limit to 8 ounces per cow daily. Do not feed calves under 3 months or high producing cows, and mix with other feeds.

Control parasites in cows as recommended by UW Extension
Dr. A C Todd warns internal parasites cut milk production up to 10 percent in dairy herds and urges systematic deworming. Even cattle without visible symptoms show milk gains of 300 to 600 pounds per lactation, worth 40 to 80 dollars per cow at feed prices. Yearling heifers also need deworming as stress slows growth toward 800 pounds for breeding. Check with a local veterinarian to plan worming.
