The week ending Jan 21 shows dairy cull cow slaughter at 86,700, down from 90,500, with 77,400 beef cull cows included for a weekly total of 163,300. Cows originated 25,800 from the East, 44,700 from the Midwest, and 16,200 from the West, while milk production varied by region and the federal government bought 365.3 million pounds of fluid milk.
USDA figures show Wisconsin 15 percent enrollment among its 43 992 dairy farmers placing it among the top five states. Minnesota led with 21.7 percent, while California New York and Pennsylvania trailed. Overall 12.4 percent of the nation's 303 580 dairy farmers joined the program, with Iowa the standout leader at 22 percent and Montana the lowest at 1.5 percent.
The National Weather Service in Minneapolis forecasts a cloudy damp period with a chance of rain or freezing rain Thursday and Friday and a chance of rain or snow Saturday. Highs will be in the 30s with lows in the mid 20s to low 30s.
Climatologist Reid A Bryson questions the carbon dioxide driven greenhouse warming theory. He argues the NRC and EPA predictions may rest on selective facts and that warming could precede CO2 rises, pointing to historical data and the ocean as a carbon storehouse that releases CO2 with warming.
Through February 5 Eau Claire area logged 61 measurable snow days with 34.8 inches at the Eau Claire airport. Measured cold included 31 subzero days and 13 days under zero, with a season peak of 32 below on December 2. Snow totals hint at above normal snowfall despite late February warmth.
