National Weather Service forecasters in Minneapolis predict a chance of snow today and Thursday with highs in the low to mid 20s and overnight lows around 10. Friday and Saturday will be mostly partly cloudy and colder with highs 15 to 20 and lows near zero.
Minnesota economist Dr. Paul Hasbargen warns dairy farmers to delay selling cull cows and avoid transfers to other dairies while awaiting final rules for the paid diversion program. He urges check with ASCS and favors slaughter sales or spring sales to maximize diversion payments and prices.
Dr Will Dahl of Blair Trempealeau County was chosen as the Milk Marketing Board's first general manager. The 39 year old will lead about 11 million in Wisconsin milk checkoff funds and take the post January 1, joining a 25 member board. Dahl currently serves as director of market development for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. He has strong dairy connections, part owns the Blair family farm, and holds a PhD in agricultural economics from UW Madison. The appointment comes after Dahl was one of three finalists, with salary details to be finalized by the board. The board offices are in Madison.
The USDA reports that assessments totaling 487,200,399 dollars have been collected from about 250,000 dairy farmers since last April. Major milk handlers and cooperatives remit the deductions to the Commodity Credit Corporation, with monthly collections covering nearly all commercial milk. The USDA is auditing dairy plants and individuals required to make these deductions to ensure CCC obligations are met.
