Calculating protein unit cost for dairy feed options
A simple method helps dairy farmers compare protein supplements by unit cost. Divide the price per hundred pounds by the crude protein percentage to get cost per pound of protein. For 44 percent soybean meal at $8.25 per hundred, the unit cost is 18.75 cents. linseed meal at 35 percent for $7 per hundred costs 20 cents, making soybean meal the better buy.
