White footed mice eyed as pollution monitors in Wisconsin mines
UW Madison researchers identify the white footed mouse as a potential indicator of heavy metal pollution from zinc copper mining in northern Wisconsin. Older mice show higher cadmium and lead levels, suggesting accumulation with age. Studies compare mined sites with uncontaminated areas to establish background levels.

Snags in Wisconsin forests draw firewood demand and wildlife concern
Wisconsin foresters warn snag trees healthy for wildlife may vanish as wood-burning grows. DNR reports 77 species rely on dead trees, including woodpeckers and owls, and urges two to three snags per acre to balance habitat with wood harvest. Roadside cutting increases with fall woodcutting.

The state Natural Resources Board approves public hearings on a plan to let local governments raise boat launching fees at public access points with minimal hearings. DNR would set a reasonable fee above the standard $2 residents $3 nonresidents. If communities objected to the figure a full hearing could be requested. The board also okayed a highway maintenance aid program within state parks and forests, funds $240,000 for 1981 82 and $250,000 for 1982 83.
