Less can be more in dairy herds says UW expert
UW dairy scientist Clarence Olson argues that testing and focusing on milk per cow boosts profitability more than expanding herd size. He cites DHI data showing 40 cows at 16,000 pounds per cow outperform 152 cows at 10,000 pounds, and notes lenders often overlook production efficiency in favor of head counts.
