Barron board approves plans for new slaughter plant
The Barron County Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a request by Joseph Mike and Barbara Barr Butzler to build a pet food processing plant south of the Barr Mink Ranch in Stanley. The board granted a special exemption for land zoned Agricultural II despite objections from Barr Mink Ranch owner Brian Lea. The plant, a fully enclosed precast facility, will handle dead animals almost exclusively and ship frozen product to pet food companies, with all waste processed on site.

Trempealeau County deputies probe the July theft of 18 bred Holstein heifers and 4 open heifers from Galaxy Enterprises near Arcadia, valued at $23,000. Investigators report no tire tracks or wire cuts and have yet to confirm the cattle’s support in the area.

Clark men honored for conservation work
The Clark County Land Conservation Committee named the 1982 conservation award winners. Ansel Messer of Unity received the Forest Management and Tree Farm Award for managing 60 acres, planting 6,500 trees, improving 40 acres, and harvesting 250,000 board feet. John Speich of Greenwood earned the Outstanding Cooperator Award for 23 years of soil conservation including 30 acres terracing, 7,000 feet of grass waterways, 3,600 feet of tiling, and residue conservation on 189 cropland acres plus 89 rented acres. They enter the West Central Association contest in Menomonie on August 31.
