A Madison news release notes that producers in the whole herd buyout program may receive cattle sale checks by August 31. State ASCS and IRS spokesmen say timing varies by income tax program, advising producers to consult their tax preparer to confirm if payment is due by August 31.
Eric Boettcher aged 22 and Marc Boettcher 19 return to the Bloomer farm for the summer, taking advantage of vacation to assist with work. The brothers help with chores while finishing plans for their futures.
National Weather Service forecasters in Madison predict partly cloudy skies across Wisconsin Thursday turning sunny Friday, then clouds and rain Saturday with thundershowers statewide. Temperatures rise to highs in the 80s Thursday through Saturday and 60s at night as a spring term proceeds at UW River Falls. In a farm note, Herman Boettcher informs his two River Falls sons at Che Nala Farm south of Bloomer they will start three times daily milking, paid by the hour to fund college courses. Eric and Marc, a senior and sophomore, study animal science and pre veterinary medicine respectively, with about 86 cows milking 74 currently and a herd total near 248 animals. productivity has risen about 596 pounds daily in the first 10 days.
Four Milwaukee and Madison chefs competed in a first ever Wisconsin State Fair cheese carving sponsored by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. Each used 75 pound cheddar blocks to depict Wisconsin dairy industry themes in 80 minutes. Judge Forrest Wilson and Monica Kass selected John Kramer of Marc Plaza Hotel Milwaukee as winner.
Door County faces a major cherry harvest squeeze as poor market prices leave two thirds of the crop unpicked. UW extension agent Cliff Ehlers notes costs of harvesting exceed potential returns, with only about 4 million pounds likely to be harvested from an expected 11 million. The national tart cherry crop reaches 351 million pounds, with Wisconsin a top producer. Ehlers cannot estimate dollar losses or rule out growers exiting the business.
The House Agriculture Committee approved H.R. 3030 by a 41-2 vote to inject about 4 billion dollars into the Farm Credit System over five years. A Senate version is set for Sept 14 markup as reform moves toward a full House floor vote likely in September.
