Barron County enters the Wisconsin State Fair Showcase Dairy Herd with 30 animals for the event. The county's 28 4-H youths and four adult leaders prepared this display, wrapping up their county fair and heading to West Allis for a week long showcase. Barron County 4-H and youth agent coordinated the delegation.
Barron County meat animal auction posted 45 921 60 in sales, over 10 400 below last year’s 66 364. A surprise pen of market chickens and rabbits drew mixed view after their absence from the catalog. Top lambs and hogs sold to Rice Lake and Cameron buyers as local clubs showcase plans and bids for the Milwaukee fair.
Don and Janet Demers longtime 4-H leaders run a breakfast stand at the Barron County fair from 8 to 10 am serving two slices of bread or two pancakes with sausage and drink for a dollar. About 250 breakfasts are served daily plus bratwursts and other items. The stand funds 4-H scholarships and leader training, while volunteers from county clubs staff the booth and shift changes pose the main challenge. The Demers family is deeply involved in 4-H activities with their children holding leadership roles.
