USDA reports improved prices for livestock producers
USDA data show total red meat and poultry output in early 1982 down 3 percent from a year earlier, lifting cattle and hog prices. With lower feed costs, producers see strong profits, the strongest since 1979, though second-half production remains below last year, pork output set to fall sharply and beef and broiler gains only modest. Slower pork, rising live prices, and tax cuts plus Social Security may sustain higher retail meat prices into mid-summer, while 1982-83 outlook expects continued production declines and cautious price support.
