In Pomona California Michael Burr Smith sought court approval to be known as Michael Smith Warwick to avoid misdirected bills and calls. His wife supported the change returning her surname to Warwick for family consistency. Their son Paul Warwick Smith, 14, becomes Paul Smith Warwick. a sister Stella in Seattle had married George William Smith and later Robert E. Smith.
In California, refinery and pipeline workers consider a strike vote Thursday as talks collapse after three weeks of shutdown. About 60,000 workers remain away, while nationwide peaks neared 90,000. A CIO spokesman at Tide Water Associated on the Avon refinery near San Francisco mentions a possible 1,300 worker meeting.
The Broadway paving committee of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce plans to formally request paving from Eighth Street to Frank Street. The body of Lenton Davis a 36 year old Decatur Neb river tug boat pilot was recovered Thursday below the Missouri and Platte rivers junction near Plattsmouth Neb. He and two companions James Brewer 21 and Donald B Gary 50 were aboard a tug boat that capsized last Friday near Council Bluffs. Brewer remains missing and Gary was recovered Friday. Davis was identified by Cass County Sheriff Tom Solomon and recovered by deputies.
U S Fifth air force fighter bombers conducted a hour by hour attack Thursday against a large communist supply and war materiel production zone between Pyongyang and Chimmanpo. Pilots reported 117 buildings destroyed and 80 heavily damaged. On the ground Patton tanks shelled red fortifications over a 20 mile stretch of the central front.
In Biggleswade England C J Jeeves, paying his wife 2 pounds 15 shillings weekly since their separation, asked the court for permission to raise maintenance. The judge rejected the request, noting the unusual claim. Jeeves cited rising living costs as the reason, while the court did not grant the increase.
Des Moines Iowa announces Waldo F Wheeler of Des Moines will serve as special assistant to the U S attorney for both northern and southern districts of Iowa. The appointment was revealed Thursday by the Iowa office of price stabilization.
The body of 48 year old Ruth Pierce of Ottumwa was recovered Thursday from the mill race by the Ottumwa light dam. She had been missing for more than a day.
The first traffic fatality in Council Bluffs for 1952 is Thomas F. Burns, 68, who died at a local hospital after being struck by a car at Twenty-third street and Broadway on May 15. Burns, a native of Fenton Illinois, had farmed near Woodbine before moving to Council Bluffs about 15 years ago and was employed at an Omaha cold storage plant. He is survived by his widow Marie, three daughters, two brothers, a sister, eleven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family church with burial at Calvary cemetery in Omaha. The inquest date will be announced. The driver, Donald Wayne Way, 18, of 220 North Nineteenth street, was booked for investigation of a personal injury accident and released under $500 bond. Burns was the seventh county traffic fatality this year.
Three unions with about 150 000 members approved a memorandum of agreement with rail carriers at the White House. The accord raises wages to address cost of living, scales back hours, and grants union control over a key crew assignment dispute. Returns to private operation hinge on contract signing in coming days.
