The FFA gathers about 2000 members in Council Bluffs with 300 registered by noon at Hotel Chieftain. Delegates from districts compete in five divisions for state titles and gold emblems. Visitors tour local sites including Offutt Air Force Base and Bluffs area landmarks.
Kindergarten registration in Council Bluffs public schools totaled 916 for next fall, 48 more than last year's first day. Director Raymond Jones expects possible doubles sessions at Gunn and Harrison as registrations exceed capacity, with 966 students attending in 1954 and over 1,000 anticipated this year.
The Swedish motor ship Parra watta struck a smaller vessel 50 miles northwest of Santa Barbara Thursday. Rescue vessels reached the scene and recovered one body and a life raft, the Coast Guard reported.
Washington reports indicate a stalled revenue bill with clashes over sales tax, income tax, and highway funds. Iowa moves to resolve funds while debates stretch toward a conference committee as Formosa and global tensions influence policy.
Des Moines announces the House Sifting Committee released several measures for debate including a Senate bill to create a toll road authority with power to build a 180 million dollar toll road between Davenport and Council Bluffs. Also up for discussion were revisions to the school reorganization law and an equalization aid principal measure with no new appropriation.
DES MOINES Korean War veterans will receive a $500 annual property tax exemption under a Senate bill passed by the House. The measure, numbered 960, advances tax relief for veterans.
Des Moines Gov Leo Hoegh withdrew from the Senate his nomination of Ira Buckles to the State Liquor Control Commission at Buckles request. Buckles recently resigned after serving as administrative assistant to Iowa attorneys general. The six year term carried a 5000 dollar yearly salary and would have followed A A Coburn of Cherokee.
House approved and sent to the Senate a 990 bill to allocate two million dollars to the Legislative Interim Committee for emergencies between July 1, 1955 and June 30, 1957. A separate bill would provide 362,500 dollars for 1956 auto license plates and 1957 validation tags. A third bill requests 11,578,409 dollars annually for operating funds for 50 state agencies over two years. Another measure seeks 5,060,000 dollars for two years for capital improvements at Board of Education institutions. A lifer parole bill was amended to bar parole for first degree murderers but allows others after 15 years unless the judge opposed. Senate approved 42 to 2 and sent to the governor a road funds bill of 12,920,606 dollars yearly to operate the Highway Department and maintain the primary road system. The Senate also approved seven claims totaling 69,008 dollars, bringing total claims paid to nearly 100,060 dollars. In executive session, nominations were presented for the Iowa Public Employee Retirement System Advisory Investment Board. Names include William Poorman and George Foerstner and Spaulding Miller. Frank Engel was nominated to the Iowa Employment Security Commission to succeed David Jenkins. A dispute over reappointment of W. B. Hamilton to the Senate Board for Education was raised.
The dry spell continues with Friday expected to be sunny and warm in Southwest Iowa. High near 80 while Thursday night should be clear and cool with a low around 50. Recent highs included 78 on Thursday and 73 Wednesday, with a 52 low that night. Nearby towns report low temperatures near freezing and statewide highs posted by Council Bluffs, Star City and Burlington.

A small tornado and heavy rains struck Arkansas and northeastern Texas early Thursday. A woman died and her husband and son were injured when a tornado ripped a Pine Bluff area home and damaged three other houses. Three more homes were damaged near Benton. In Texas, hail battered the region and a lightning bolt killed a railroad worker near Waco and wounded another man near Corsicana.
National Guard units in Council Bluffs and Southwest Iowa joined a nationwide speed and efficiency drill named Operation Minuteman. Col. Chauncey H. Carl praised the response as a huge success with 70 to 95 percent turnout across area units and rapid mobilization of 267 enlisted men and 49 officers locally.
DES MOINES Iowa lawmakers debate a mouse bill to reapportion the Legislature. Rep Stevens says the measure stalled in the Senate Sifting Committee despite House passage 98 to 2. The plan would base Senate seats on population and House seats on area, boosting Senate from 50 to 60 and reducing House from 108 to 99.
An earthquake in Volos Greece rattled the port city about 100 miles northwest of Athens. Five bodies recovered as authorities fear a higher death toll with most buildings partly or completely destroyed. Police note widespread damage and collapse across the 31 000 resident city.
Former President Herbert Hoover urged a major shift in Communist attitude before any meaningful changes could be made to the United Nations charter. He spoke Thursday, outlining his view on international cooperation and reforms.
The Town Conservation Commission will operate the Lake Manawa pump again this year to raise the water four feet. Mrs Emmett Hannan of Council Bluffs announced after a meeting at Ottumwa that 36800 is available to pump water from the Missouri River into the lake once the ditch is cleaned. A local contractor will be hired to perform the job promptly. last year the state financed the pump and the year before Conservation Inc. funded it.
