Rev. H G Parker, retired in 1944 after 41 years, remains busy in Southwest Iowa. He built his Cedar Rapids church in 1911, served nine churches, and polishes skills as a carpenter and craftsman. Now based in Council Bluffs, he supplies Pacific Junction and Adair churches, makes 300 hospital calls, and handles 20 funerals in the past year.
A spring inter synodical Lutheran Brotherhood rally is planned for Thursday at Bethel Church in Omaha. A panel on Christian Leadership in American Life will feature Odell Hanson Nebraska Associated Press state editor Sidney J Gottheid clerk of the district court in Omaha and Earl H Schroer high school principal in Omaha.
Local Presbyterian churches plan an all conference for Sunday at 2:30 p m in Bethany church. Miss Lena E Smith, field director for the Presbyterian board of Christian education, will lead sessions on nursery kindergarten primary and junior work with Grace First Bethany Westminster Glendale and Manewa churches represented.
The Ladies Aid of the Lutheran church in Avoca plans a hobby show and tea on June 11. Mrs. Aten Scheel is chairman. The show will be held at the church and is open to the public. Entries should be filed the day before, though distant entrants may arrive the morning of the event.
Plans completed by the education board of the Methodist church for an annual vacation church school. The program runs June 2 through June 13 for youngsters from kindergarten through high school.
Oakland churches plan Rural Life Sunday activities centered on the rural church role in small communities. Westside 4-H members will participate in a morning service at the Methodist church with a seeds and soil dedication. Diverse sermons by Rev Norman Brook and Rev W K Hasenyager highlight the theme. Local youths will meet at 5 pm at the Congregational church for United Youth. Marilyn Campbell will lead a discussion on The Christian and His Carpenter. Eight residents attended the 106th Iowa Christian Churches convention in Marshalltown recently.
A study on divisions within denominations lists six main causes including geographical, social and political factors, discrimination, rivalries of leaders, denominational loyalty, and resistance to unfamiliar practices. It notes unity pressures and cites the World Council of Churches report prepared from meetings in the United States and abroad. The report, prepared for a world conference in Lund, Sweden, involves 158 denominations from 43 countries and is led by Rev. Floyd Tomkins.
George W. Amerson of Maywood Illinois will give two Bahai lectures here Sunday at 2 p.m. in Railroad YMCA and 7 p.m. at the Bahai center. Amerson is teacher and secretary of the Maywood Bahai assembly. His subject is Its Now the Time. This is his second appearance in Council Bluffs this year. Talks sponsored by the local Bahai group. Center located at 908 North Eighth street in the home of Mr and Mrs Alvin Meyer.
New York reports DuMont director James Caddigan aims to grow a large religious audience by TV programs like Fulton Sheen while warning broadcasts cannot replace church services. He plans a drama around ministerial challenges and stresses equal time for all faiths to foster understanding.
The Presbyterian Board of National Missions marks 150 years with a world premiere film And Now Tomorrow shown Friday at 8 p.m. in Grace Church Council Bluffs. The event coincides with New York screenings and invites churches including Hardin Glendale Manawa Missouri Valley Woodbine Neola Shelby Avoca Walnut Carson Griswold Atlantic Audubon Guthrie Sent er and Adair.
Santa Rosa Calif The Hugh Codding Building Enterprises will try to build a 4000 square foot church in one day June 21 as part of a national Presbyterian drive to publicize church needs and raise 12 million dollars. Codding donated the land for the church site in his subdivision park and financing will be arranged by the Redwoods Presbytery men’s chapters.
Plans for cooperative Methodist Presbyterian VBS in Sidney announced with sessions 9 to 11 a m Monday to Friday and a closing program Thursday. Ages 4 to junior high included. Rev. Dean Waychoff and Rev. R A McBlain co superintendents. Sidney Church of Christian Education VBS set May 39 from 9 to 11 45 a m daily.
Rev Arthur Farrell of First Baptist church will travel to Chicago for the American Baptist convention. The five day meeting starts Monday with a pre convention council and a committee on missionary cooperation. He will return to Council Bluffs next Saturday.
The Men's Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church will meet Tuesday at 4 30 p m in the church. The gathering was announced Saturday by the Rev Arthur Farrell.
Viola Bichell of Glenwood is engaged to direct the Lincoln High School choir in Council Bluffs and will also serve as organist for the Congregational church.
Dr Franklin C Fry will headline the four day Iowa United Lutheran Synod convention at St John’s English Lutheran Church. About 300 Iowa delegates and guests from nearby states are expected. The event includes ordinations, officer elections, reports, and joint sessions with the missionary and women’s societies. Fry returns from Korea tour to speak at multiple sessions.
The 78th annual Iowa Synodical Missionary society convention meets Monday for a three day session at St John’s Lutheran church, in conjunction with the 98th annual United Lutheran Synod of Town gathering. Membership stands at 2,207 with the Life and In Memoriam service led by the women’s society at 7 30 PM on opening night.
The Winter Quarters district plans a Sunday LDS church conference beginning in Omaha at 10 a m with speakers including Rev Rohifing and Miss Vera Ehlers. Delegates meet at 7 p m in Lincoln, while sessions in Council Bluffs feature Elder Johnis Longdon and Waldo M Anders. Mrs. Walter A Voss leads the district plans with Miss Mabel Fenner as associate secretary. Bible Lands Today will be a speaker focus.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Fischer of Route 2 were re elected president of the Wedded Band at Our Savior s Lutheran church Thursday night. Other new officers are Mr and Mrs Gene Rodenburg vice president Mr and Mrs Clyde Jensen secretary and Mr and Mrs Richard Montgomery treasurer.
The Rev. W. A. Brown of Springfield Missouri, general treasurer of the Assemblies of God, will address services Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. in the local Assembly of God church. Bible school starts June 2.
