Israel, first Hebrew nation in 2,000 years, proclaimed independence in Tel Aviv as British rule ends at midnight. The declaration asserts historic Jewish right to Palestine as a national home and cites Jerusalem as the Holy City.
The Palestine special assembly urged sending a United Nations mediator to the Holy Land with a 37 to 15 vote and abstentions. The plan directs a peace commissioner, backed by the US and France, to a 58 nation plenary for final action amid Arab Jewish tensions and calls for a Jewish state within the British mandate.
Arab forces claim a first major win in Palestine as Arab, Jewish accounts cite 200 Jews killed, four physicians captured, and prisoners taken after a dawn battle near Kfar Etzion while Bab el Wad siege continues. In Minnesota, a nationwide packing plant strike triggers National Guard deployment to Newport and South St. Paul amid plant violence and hostages at Cudahy.
Canon City Colorado can report War den Roy Best said Charles McClelland a 19 year old inmate confessed to the August murders of Mr and Mrs Robert May near Omaha. McClelland described picking them up in Nebraska and shooting them in the back before disposing of their bodies and taking cash and travelers checks. He drove the victims car to Omaha crossed the Missouri to Council Bluffs then waited for news of the discovery.
The Weather Bureau reports cloudy conditions with showers or thunderstorms on Saturday. Temperatures peak around 70 with fresh to strong southerly winds. Total precipitation recorded 6.81 inches with a deficiency of 0.6 inch.
President Truman urged Congress to pass a long range farm bill to raise productive capacity and ensure abundance. Hecalled for flexible price supports, continued soil conservation, and strong export outlets while forecasting a one year extension of current programs and emphasis on farm income parity.
Iowa voters favor a state maximum speed for passenger cars with about 85 percent supporting a law. Many want automobile driving instruction in all high schools and yearly compulsory inspections of brakes lights and safety equipment. Opinions on the maximum speed vary with most favoring 50 55 mph range and others spread across 35 to 80 mph. Few schools currently offer driving lessons under school direction. Continued on Page 10.
Carl E Magnussen 55 of Underwood a Boomer township farmer and church layman died Thursday evening when his tractor plunged into a 25 foot ravine on his son Don’s farm route 2 Neola. Coroner H Stanley Woodring ruled suffocation. Magnussen arrived from Denmark in 1912 and belonged to St Pauls Lutheran choir and Danish Lutheran Brotherhood. Survived by widow Esther and five children, funeral Sunday with private rites then service at 3 p.m. at St Pauls Lutheran Church Boomer Township. Burial in Boomer-Lutheran Cemetery. Body held at Woodring funeral home until Saturday afternoon then taken to residence.
A Red Oak man was appointed secretary treasurer of the Montgomery County National Farm at the Federal Land Bank of Omaha, according to an official announcement.
The School Board plans to name a new superintendent by June 9 to replace Gerald W. Kirn. At the Thursday meeting, Vern Aliphin accused Clyde Cavitt and Lloyd Roper of bypassing the budget process, while Cavitt pressed for approval to purchase summer janitorial supplies from a $5,500 next year budget.
Iowa Democratic leaders forecast the state convention will endorse President Truman while sending an uninstructed delegation to the national convention in Philadelphia. They expect a brief resolutions list focusing on domestic and foreign policy with no civil rights mention. Eight congressional districts will elect delegates and alternates, followed by eight at large delegates and their alternates.
Mike Kizar, 42, was sentenced to one year in Fort Madison penitentiary and fined 300 dollars after pleading guilty to breaking and escaping jail. The former Eagle Grove man escaped Marion county jail on May 2 and was captured near Bussey two days later by District Judge Earl Vincent.
Chamber directors accused the city council of approving $40 raises for deputies at a late stage without prior discussion or inquiry. George Woods said the issue was process not merit and called for investigative committees before such actions. They also urged off street parking lots and dedicated meter funds to curb misallocation.

Joe Kunnen, 72, of Calmar was killed Thursday while aiding tenants on his farm near Calmar. A beam cracked as a building jack failed, causing the house being rolled onto its foundation to collapse onto him in the basement of a fire-destroyed home.
