The threat of a railroad strike disrupted daily life as eight eight major railroads halted perishable shipments upsetting markets from New York to California. Unemployment and higher prices followed with widespread layoffs and possible fuel shortages as mines and industries faced shutdowns due to car, storage, and transport bottlenecks.
Des Moines attorney and former district judge George E. Brammer died in his sleep at his home early Sunday. His death was found after his son James investigated his absence around 11 a.m. Brammer had practiced law in Des Moines since graduating from Drake University.
Des Moines reports about sixteen thousand dollars in purses will be paid during three days of horse racing at the Iowa State Fair. Speed Superintendent J. W. Cory Jr states twenty six races are scheduled for August 30 31 and September 1. Property owners in the First Ward funded 3,400 feet of gravel and dirt resurfacing as the citys get out of the mud program moves forward. Spencer avenue will get 2,200 feet resurfaced east of North Broadway Elliott street 1,200 feet west of Broadway Fourth avenue sections from Twelfth to Thirteenth streets and Sixteenth street from Fifth to Sixth avenues were filed with the city treasurer. Under the program property owners pay half the resurfacing material cost with the city covering the other half.

The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America CIO in New York will establish a million dollar free medical center for 60 000 members within three months, with centers planned in Philadelphia and Chicago. Funds come from New York clothing manufacturers’ administrative surplus, and the center will cost 500000 annually to operate with no expected rise in clothing prices. Debates continue over social insurance for steel workers, as unions push for employer funded hospital and medical care while some steel executives seek lower benefits and shared costs. Aluminum Company of America backs an insurance program covering illness accident and hospitalization.
Charles Chappell of Keokuk filed in district court to stop 2 percent mid levy for schools. He argues levies can legally be voted for only one year, while 1946 approval covered more than ten years. Defendants include Keokuk independent school district Lee County Supervisor A G Peck and County Auditor H R Bartholomew.
DES MOINES the state liquor control commission has not decided on the color for the 1948 49 liquor books but says red will be avoided if possible. A commission official notes people dislike red books as they are conspicuous and show up in a vest pocket or pocketbook.
Chicago stock handlers union leader says no results expected from wage dispute talks as conciliation fails. Directors call halt to trading at 1 p m CST, with midnight strike looming and further talks canceled. The CIO affiliated union has led a walkout since March 16 amid wage disputes with major packers including Armour and Company.
Washington reports that John J. Lewis gave hard coal operators a 60 day notice to end the UMW contract covering 80 000 anthracite miners. He seeks a new contract by July 10 with wage conferences starting May 20 unless agreed otherwise.
VALLEY FORGE, Pa. The Reading railroad and Montgomery county district attorney said they found indications of tampering with the rails may have caused the Sunday night wreck that killed two crewmen. A sideplate joining two rails was removed. District Attorney Forrest called the evidence suspicious and said the track appeared tampered with. A Reading statement said nuts and bolts from the plate lay along the track, indicating intentional removal.
The U S Weather Bureau forecast partly cloudy skies and cooler conditions in Bluffs and vicinity on Tuesday with a high near 60. Occasional rain noted in the southeast and extreme east portions, while the west and central areas stay cooler with afternoon highs around the mid 50s, rising to near 60 by Tuesday afternoon. Total precipitation reported 6.81 inches, total excess 0.45 inch.

Council Bluffs railroad workers met at Eagles hall Monday morning to discuss a threatened strike set for 6 a.m. Tuesday. Albert Paulson, chairman of the local Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, said only one order is to strike, with eight railroad chairmen involved. Union leaders planned a possible general chairman and a strike headquarters, while some members hoped orders would be rescinded after the government seized control. Union Pacific offices in Omaha prepared for use by an army officer as part of the seizure.
