Detroit reports disruption of a class trip to Washington as rail talk foreshadows shortages. Across the nation, 88 railroads halt perishable shipments triggering layoffs, rising prices, and fears of food shortages as governments move to seize control.
Des Moines attorney George E Brammer, a former district judge, died in his sleep at his home early Sunday. His death was noticed after his son James found him unresponsive around midnight. Brammer had been practicing in Des Moines since graduating from Drake University.
Des Moines reports about 16.00 dollars in purses will be paid over three days of horse racing at the Iowa State fair. Speed Superintendent Jow Cory notes 26 races are set for August 30 to September 1. Sioux City reports police chief Peter Baumer saying the Missouri River search for a body has been abandoned after several reports of a man near the bridge possibly jumping in.

New York reports expansion of industry wide medical and hospital benefits led by steel steel, aluminum, auto, and electrical equipment labor leaders. A $1 million free medical center for 60,000 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America members will be set up in New York within three months with similar centers planned for Philadelphia and Chicago funded by New York clothing manufacturers. The center will cost $500,000 yearly to operate from an insurance fund surplus, with claims it will not raise clothing prices.
A district court suit filed by Charles Chappell seeks an injunction to restrain Keokuk area authorities from collecting a 244 mill school levy approved in 1946 for more than one year. Defendants named include the independent school district of Keokuk Lee County Superintendent A G Peck and County Auditor H R Bartholomew.
DES MOINES The state liquor control commission hasn't decided on the color for the 1348-49 liquor books but it says they won't be red if the color can be avoided. People don't like red colored books because they are too conspicuous, a commission official explained. They show up too well in a fellow's vest pocket or pocketbook.
Directors of the Chicago livestock exchange halted trading as a midnight strike by handlers loomed. Trading would end at 1 p m Central Standard Time while conciliation talks in the wage dispute stalled. CIO Stock Handlers union chief Monaghan doubted progress, noting the union affiliation with the CIO Packinghouse Workers and ongoing strikes since March 16.
John L. Lewis issued a 60 day notice to hard coal operators that the United Mine Workers seek a new contract by July 10 for 80 000 anthracite miners. Wage conferences are asked to begin May 20 unless a later date is agreed.
