The CIO asked the War Labor Board on Wednesday to extend the expired contract with Montgomery Ward and Co. pending negotiations for a new agreement. The request followed Tuesday's union victory in a collective bargaining election and comes after the federal seizure of the plant last April 26 amid a long dispute with the company.
Federal Judge William H. Holly declined to rule on the legality of government seizure of Montgomery Ward Chicago plants, noting events moot the issue. The CIO union won the contract election 2,440 to 1,593 as employees return to work after 14 days of government control. Avery resumes control of the plant, while officials say the election ends federal possession and seeks to settle worker grievances.
Crystalline City deputy sheriff Garrett Barnes said Soula Villegos admitted killing his wife Louise Villegos by striking her head and packing the body in a trunk sent from Chicago to Los Angeles. The witness said Villegos claimed not noticing the death until attempting to revive her. He reportedly killed during an argument after a Chicago tavern visit, then moved the body to a trunk and shipped it via John Lopez. A trunk opened in Los Angeles revealed a salt packed corpse with clothes over it, prompting police action after a railway clerk reported melting salt. Villegas was arrested in Crystal City after Chicago police traced him home from Chicago where he worked at a given plant.
Dublin reports a political clash as Prime Minister Eamon De Valera’s opponents accuse him of using aggressive tactics to call a nationwide election for May 40, the second within a year, after a narrow transport bill defeat 64 to 63 in the house. Weather data from Erie shows unsettled, warmer conditions with possible thunderstorms, and Nebraska notes scattered showers and cooler extremes in the west.
Ten crew members and a bombardier from the Sioux City air base bailed out of a burning Flying Fortress near Belden and Wayne Nebraska after 10 pm Tuesday. Col. George A. Blakey said the aircraft flew without full control through the night for over 100 miles before crashing near Denison. The crash details and the stash remained unclear.
Three cities Omaha San Francisco and Ogden opened sales of postage stamps depicting the Promontory spike to honor the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Gov. Herbert B. Meant read Roosevelt's message as survivors of the 1869 celebration were invited. Promontory once the rail junction is now a memory with relics and stories of early rail pioneers.

London reports Adolf Hitler has appointed 29-year-old Maj. Gen. Oberst Pelz to command German air forces in the west and assemble a force to repel an impending Allied invasion. The move follows four years since Nazi advances in the Low Countries as Allied air power grows, with analysts predicting air superiority within a week of invasion.
A total of 22 200 hogs jammed the Omaha market Wednesday with 15 800 new salable shipments and 7 000 carried over from Tuesday. A marketing committee member warned of possible shipment regulation and embargoes were posed at several points. The group asked shipments for Thursday and noted they may not be sold. About 10 800 of Wednesday’s run expected to be carried over Thursday. The heavy run, blamed on the corn freeze and fears of feed, extended to cattle with 9 000 of which were received Wednesday.
Des Moines reports farmers in Iowa are behind in spring field work with only small corn planting progress by early May. Meteorologist Charles D. Reed notes oats sowing paused after three quarters of planned acreage and machinery pooled to operate around the clock when weather allows. Sunshine fell about 27 percent below normal last week as field work limited to a few hours on two days.
Soviet troops completed the seizure of Sevastopol after a 24 day siege. Tolukhin and Yeremenko led the offensive that cleared the Crimean peninsula, with casualties heavy on both sides and the Black Sea port now back under Soviet control.
The West Pottawattamie county AAA committee reports no new coin for the CCC while certificates total 233 for 104 176 bushels. The latest 32 certificates range from five to 1000 bushels, with 23 totaling 495 bushels. The largest certificate up to date is 5200 bushels and the smallest three. Total coin earmarked remains just under 150000 bushels. Township AAA men unable to reach farmers have them report figures directly to the county committee.
Mrs. Reta Jones Babcock, 19, suffocated by smoke in an upstairs bedroom at 2401 South Seventh Street. Dr. Frank P. Winkler former president of Town State Medical association died at his home after heart trouble. He had spent about two months in a Rochester Minnesota hospital.
President Roosevelt again declined to discuss a possible fourth term at a news conference. Republicans and some Democrats read the silence as an intent to seek another nomination, as party delegates meet in Chicago in two months. Senators Wherry Johnson Tunnell and others weighed in with cautious or skeptical comments, while some Democrats urged drafting the president for the nation's good.
Schools in the district will collect paper on the dates listed Friday May 12. If paper is not collected residents should call the school principal. Tin is gathered on the third Friday following the third Thursday each month. Fat disposal instructions urge taking waste cooking fats to grocery stores for payment of four cents per pound and two ration stamps per pound.

RAF heavy bombers hammered rail yards and airfields in France and Belgium while American Thunderbolts and Marauders joined in raids on Berlin, Paris, Annecy, and other targets as the invasion preparations continued.
