Up to a million 4Fs aged 18 to 37 may choose civilian or war industry work or army labor battalions as a House military subcommittee drafts legislation. The panel led by Rep Costello abandons Easter recess to advance controls on the group.
The War draft plan proposes that 4-Fs assigned to essential civilian or war industries may have to join a union if the shop is a union shop. They would remain in civilian status with wages and other ordinary incidents of civilian employment, possibly including union membership as a condition of employment. The plan aims to replace younger, occupationally deferred men for combat service and seeks a bill after the recess.
Schools will collect paper on specified days and residents are urged to contact district principals if paper is not collected.
