He had fled after car theft in Houston and a wreck in Perry, and allegedly struck a boy while posing as an agent. He had a long record dating to 1924 and was an Angola escapee.

Robert J. Arndt 63, a Chicago, Burlington and Quincy machinist, was killed when a locomotive struck him in Centralia Iowa. He had recently alighted from an engine and backed into the path of a road locomotive. Arndt formerly served as foreman at Christopher, Illinois roundhouse and Creston, Iowa roundhouse. He worked 33 years with the road. He is survived by his widow and two sons Duane of Centralia and James, in the navy.
