Gould Dietz Dies Near Minneapolis

Gould Dietz, 80, retired Omaha tumberman and aviation enthusiast, died Tuesday near Groveland Lake Minnetonka while eating breakfast. Cause given as heart disease. He was in town for a convention of the National Aeronautics Association and died at the home of his niece Miss Evelyn Stickney and another niece, Mrs. Carl Gage, who also resides in Groveland.

Bus Franchise Vote Set For Aug 3 In City

City council members set August 3 for a special election on a new bus franchise after Council Bluffs Transit Company formally requested the election. If approved by voters the 10 year franchise grants an occupancy tax of 2 percent and requires buses on streets within 60 days of approval. Officials of the new transit firm expect bus service within 30 days of election. Only one objection arose, from local attorney P C Rasmussen, who urged wording changes on line transfers. No action was taken on his request.

Des Moines story describes a $5 million Creston area project to supply power to about 18,500 farms via five southwest Iowa cooperatives. Earl Wisdom of the Iowa Rural Electric Cooperatives Association cites a $4.125 million REA loan and a 15,000 kilowatt steam plant near Creston plus 151 miles of transmission lines. Thunderjets Fly Des Moines to Offutt in 17 Minutes

Twenty two F-84 Thunderjets, despite strong head winds, averaged 475 miles per hour on a Des Moines to Offutt field leg in 17 minutes. The planes stayed in Omaha overnight and were to return to Dow Air Base, Maine, the next day. Some instruments were removed for modification causing a late arrival and poor weather flying readiness.

The Fukui military government reports casualty figures for the quake zone including Fukui city and 99 villages with estimated dead 3155 and seriously injured 7752. Buildings damaged 30721. Fukui city dead estimated at 4000. All Americans escaped serious injury though some suffered minor burns and bruises. American relief teams reached the scene to aid the injured and homeless.

London Dockers End Wildcat Strike Return to Work

London dock workers voted at a mass meeting to return to work on Wednesday, ending a 16 day wildcat stoppage that strained food supplies. A labor government declared a National emergency as about 2,000 soldiers moved into the port to unload 232 ships, while over 18,000 men remained idle.

Ronald Paasch 19 of Walnut was elected state vice president of Walnut 4-H here Tuesday. He serves as assistant leader of the Layton Livewires club and is the son of Mr and Mrs Hugo Paasch. His Angus steer Mistery won the grand championship at the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City last fall. Other officers named include Floyd Peters of Bellevue secretary treasurer and Elvin Largon of West Branch historian.

Temperatures over the five day period will average near normal with slow warming and cool nights, generally no rain through Friday aside from scattered showers totaling about a tenth inch or less on Saturday and Sunday. Nebraska shows a fall pattern midweek with showers and thunderstorms and partly cloudy skies Sunday, with a warmer Wednesday and cooler Friday or Saturday. Precipitation is light, with totals ranging from .10 inch in the west to .25 to .5 inch east, and overall a slight below normal temperature trend. Total precipitation to date 9.29 inches, total deficiency 4.29 inches.

30 Millionth Bell Telephone Installed in Marshalltown

The 30 millionth Bell system telephone was installed in the home of a 26 year old Purple Heart recipient in Marshalltown. Ceremonies linked long distance calls to Seattle and New York City. The device was installed by Northwestern Bell, part of the Bell system, marking 72 years since Bell’s invention.
