Five Lewis Businesses Destroyed by Major Fire

A blaze swept through the Lewis business district destroying five buildings and two wooden structures. Damages were estimated at 30000 dollars by Friday noon. Firefighters from Atlantic, Lewis, and Griswold battled the flames until morning with no further outbreaks.

Wells and Walters Attend Dewey Gathering in Iowa

Warren Wells of Cool Bhuffs and Roland Walters of Lenox attended a Dewey conference in his motel suite in Wil dayson Iowa. They supported Dewey from the first ballot and helped him win 13 Iowa votes on the crucial second ballot. The invitation arrived Friday morning.

Two More Polio Cases Reported

Infantile paralysis cases rose to 38 with two new patients from southwest Town. Geary Oloff, 13, and Janice Fitzpatrick, 7, were admitted to Mercy hospital after late Thursday arrivals. Mercy hospital records show 19 poliomyelitis patients in care, including Charles Kemish, 27, in Porta, using an iron lung since Saturday.

Clean-up Bill Signed by President Truman Sets Cleanup Funds

President Truman signed a bill appropriating SH977457 for cleanup expenses across government offices before June 30. The measure also provides 25,000,000 to activate the revived selective service system and 2,000,000 for the displaced Detson y commission.

Senator George A. Wilson secured the Republican nomination over Burlington attorney John C. Calvin by about 100000 votes in the June 7 Iowa primary. Official tallies: Wilson 185215, Calvin 85402. Democrat nominee Gillette defeated Seemann with 51575 to 14680 votes.
