Eastern Women Inspect County Livestock Wealth Tour

Sixteen eastern women on a tour sponsored by the Armour Livestock bureau visited western Iowa farms to study cattle and hog production. They traveled muddy stock tracks from Weston to Underwood Neola and Minden, dined at Don Storjohann’s home, and viewed soil and conservation projects before ending near Council Bluffs under Edward N Wentworth supervision.

Dutch Airliner Drops Into Sea

A four engine KLM plane crashed in the sea off Bari Italy killing many aboard. Officials said 24 bodies were recovered including 16 men 5 women and 3 children with more feared trapped in debris. Causes under investigation with reports of possible inflight fire from 15000 feet on a Batavia to Amsterdam run.

Governors End 41st Conference Endorses Foreign Policy

Colorado Springs report says governors endorsed the administration's foreign policies including support for the United Nations, the European Recovery Program, and the North Atlantic Pact. They rejected a push for a 20 percent cut in federal aid, noting states cannot reject federal funds. Orators to Compete in K of P Contest

DES Moines reports eight states send senool orators to the th annual Knights of Pythias contest here Thursday. Iowa’s entrant is William Kruse 17 of Sioux City. Nebraska Kansas Missouri Indiana Minnesota Wisconsin are also represented. Regional winner earns a 250 scholarship for college and may enter the national contest at San Diego Aug 10 where scholarships from 500 to 2,000 will be awarded.

The House appropriations committee approved a $200 increase in the stationery allowance for each House member for the current session. Each member already has $500 for this purpose. The committee also approved $2,022,000 to fund a recently passed bill granting each member an additional clerk at base pay of $3,000, or about $4,200 with temporary raises, and $500 annually for telephone and telegraph tolls.

Omahans Injured in Plane Crash Near North Fifteenth

Two Omaha residents were critically injured Thursday at 3 p m when their Fairchild PT 126 plane crashed near North Fifteenth Street and River Boulevard. Wilfred Scarborough, 26, of Blondo Street, and Harald Honeywell, 21, of East Omaha, were taken to Council Bluffs Hospital. Police cited firemen saying both were in bad shape. The plane, owned by Aero-Service Inc, was on a pleasure flight from Omaha Municipal Airport.

Convict Matusik Sentenced for Murder of Wife

Ruun Island case. Joseph Matusik, 44, tech, was found guilty of killing his wife Eva, 40, whom he believed unfaithful. He attempted to trap her by wiring their house for sound and claimed the death was an accident. A seven and five juror panel delivered a sealed verdict after six hours of deliberation. Circuit Judge A J Scheineman imposed life imprisonment.

Morrison La Woman Slain and Body Slashed

The nude and mutilated body of 22 year old Harv y A Stahlhut was found in a walk in refrigerator at the tavern she and husband operated in Morrison. Sheriff John A Meyer said she was slain by a maniac, with throat cut and body slit. Her husband, away on Wednesday, discovered the scene after returning around 4 a.m. The infant son was unharmed. Investigators expected a state crime bureau agent. no suspects named.

Polio Victim Nancy Shellberg In Fairly Good Condition

Nancy Shellberg eight year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Edwin Shellberg Griswold was in fairly good condition Thursday in Mercy hospital polio ward. She was hospitalized Wednesday night and is the eighth southwest Iowa infantile paralysis victim of the year.

DES MOINES The streetcar men's union executive board will decide Friday whether to resume a strike of operators and maintenance men against the Des Moines Railway Co. Rainstorm causes minor damage in Council Bluffs area

Heavy rain and hail inflicted some damage across Council Bluffs and Omaha. Four greenhouses suffered severe losses in Omaha with shattered glass and a $20,000 estimate from one operator. Paving was lifted at streets and water rushed through a duplex foundation. One tornado hit Auburn causing about $25,000 in damage to the airport and planes.
