J. J. Hughes Dies in Des Moines After Stroke
J. J. Hughes longtime Council Bluffs resident and Iowa Democratic power died Wednesday in Des Moines after an 11 week stroke. He founded a life insurance career in 1902 with Northwestern Mutual and held senior posts in state and national party affairs including secretary of the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee and sergeant at arms for the Democratic National Committee. He headed recovery agencies during the Roosevelt era and served as an ambassador for federal housing programs. He was born in Council Bluffs and survived by his wife Clara and four children.
