Sunday Rush At Lake Manawa Draws Crowds

Lake Manawa hosted its busiest day of the season with thousands of swimmers fishermen and pleasure seekers filling the lake facilities. Vehicles clogged surrounding roads and both Fish and Game Club and Country Club lots were packed with cars. Out of town visitors were common and one resident called it the largest crowd ever seen. No official visitor count was recorded.

Two Congressmen Favorable To Labor Named

Ray Mills of the Iowa State Federation of Labor told a midwest Labor's League for Political Education session that only two of Iowa’s eight congressmen favor labor. He named Reps Gross of Waterloo and Schwengel of Davenport as the supporters. The AFT discussed strategies to back labor-friendly candidates for 1956 senatorial and congressional races.

Wide Variety Of Youth Activities Get Underway

The region launches summer programs for children with Red Cross swimming lessons drawing large crowds in Pottawattamie County. 600 of 2,600 swimmers registered at Crystal Pool join sessions from Underwood to Walnut and Avoca to Red Oak. City playgrounds open with 250 enrollments and a doll and hobby show planned. Girl Scout Camp Wildwood starts three one week sessions while Ki Y Day Camp begins with 45 boys hiking and later swims at the YMCA.

Fisher Plan No Action Despite False Confession

An Air Force spokesman said Capt Harold Fischer Jr. of Swea City Iowa a Korean War jet ace released May 31 from Chinese prison camps and three other flier prisoners falsely confessed to crossing the Yalu under Air Force orders. No disciplinary action is planned and the officers actions are under study with a likely clean bill of health. Parks denied signing any confession and said his son sold his wartime diary for publication.

Day to Confer With Gov Hoegh on Iowa Toll Road

Frederick J. Day a Council Bluffs realtor active in young Republicans was due to meet Monday with Governor Leo Hoegh at Des Moines to discuss the Iowa Toll Road Authority. Man to Head Girls' School at Davenport

For first time in St. Katherine's history a man is named head master. Rt. Rev. Gordon Smith announced T. C. Hinckley, currently an official at a California men’s college, will begin duties July 11, succeeding Miss Katherine Zierleyn who resigns to lead a private girls' school in Connecticut.

Red Oak Man Is Critically Hurt

Richard Rip Yates 37 of Red Oak in critical condition after a Sunday head on collision on Highway 44 four miles east of Red Oak. Yates suffered a fractured skull and concussion. Also injured were Yates' father 64 with pelvic fracture and Ruth Sours 41 with fractures of the right arm collarbone and ribs. Donald Sours 36 Pekin and his 14 year old son were uninjured. Mrs Sours was booked for illegal passing.

Temperatures remain in the high 80s and 90s with 87 expected Tuesday in Southwest Iowa after a Monday high near 93. A slight chance of late Monday thunderstorms is noted as cooler air moves in from the northwest. highs and lows are listed for Monday night through Tuesday morning.

Postal Men Launch Fund Drive For Yocom Family

A public subscription fund was started Monday by postal transportation men for the tragedy stricken Yocom family. Robert Yocom, 34, was burned saving his daughter Barbara, who died from burns when a wall paper steamer exploded in their home. The fund aims to raise at least $2,000 in two weeks. donations may be sent to John Lindsay at 303 Highland Drive Cedar Rapids.

Fatalities On Iowa Highways

Five persons were killed in motor vehicle accidents on Iowa highways during the past weekend. Names include Richard Townsend 22, Willard Hess 22, Cora Luell 63, Michael Krottch 8, J E Knoll 63, John Gassman 73. Several others injured in crashes near Clarksville, Schaller, Marshalltown, Jewell, and Rock Rapids with varying outcomes.

Five In Family Hurt In Accident

Five members of the Harvey Nicholson family were injured in a Sunday truck pickup crash on Highway 30 four miles south of Dunlap. Driver Nicholson, 52, and two children were taken to Mercy Hospital Council Bluffs. Mrs Nicholson and Charles, about 2, to Denison Hospital. Deputy Weber said the northbound pickup pulled in front of a southbound truck parked by a tire repair.

Eisenhower seeks permanent four star rank for Ridgway

President Eisenhower asked the Senate to approve permanent four star rank for General Matthew Ridgway effective at his June 30 retirement as Army chief of staff. Banker Fined In Check-Kiting Case In Des Moines

DES MOINES banker Guy D Benod er president of Hartford Carlisle Savings Bank Carlisle was fined 2000 by Federal Judge William F Riley for his role in an alleged check kiting scheme. Stevens former Des Moines used car dealer pleaded guilty and faces a 1009 fine and three year jail term. The judge opted probation for 15 months for Schooler citing community standing.

Transformer Burns Shuts Downtown Power Line

A transformer burned at the Iowa Power and Light Co. substation in the alley near the old Post Office on South Sixth Street. The first outage started at 2 10 p.m. and service was restored six minutes later. A second failure occurred at 2 71 p.m. and was restored shortly after.
