West Germany Faces New Era
Western allies announce a Friday night drastic currency reform in their zones to curb money in circulation and pave the way for ERP participation. A new Deutsche mark will replace old marks with a 40 to 40 exchange for Sunday, a $12 per person limit, and a two month window to convert up to 60 marks per person. The plan targets savings and balances, with loans available to firms, and excludes the Berlin four power sector. A buying wave followed the announcement as citizens rushed to spend before devaluation.
