Probe Opens Into Cause of Plane Crash

MT CARMEL Pa P-Charred pieces scattered over a coal blackened hillside marked the crash site of a United Airlines DC-? (DC-6?) with 43 aboard. Investigators scoured wreckage after an engine flame prompted an attempted emergency landing near Mount Carmel. Passengers included Earl Carroll and Beryl Wallace. A civil aeronautics board team led by Joseph Fluett investigated as other agencies aided. The crash was one of the deadliest in domestic airline history with 39 passengers and four crew. An emergency office was opened as investigators examined wallets and personal items recovered amid the wreckage.

Katelman Loses in Power Vote

Alderman Katelman suffers defeat on a proposal to empower the city to buy Western Town Power Company. The 7 to 1 vote favored leaving the issue open for a November public vote with a proposed price not to exceed 2.2 million dollars plus improvements. Dr I R Kall opposed after initial hesitation and cast the lone yes.

Trial Continued CEDAR RAFIDS

The trial of George Scurlock, chief forward for the CIO United Packinghouse Workers union at Wilson and Company plant, has been continued to June 24. Police Judge Harry S. Johnson said the continuance was granted because Patrolman Harold Cerveny, who would testify that Scurlock obstructed traffic near the plant on May 11 during the meat strike, is on vacation.

Transfer of Alcohol Plants Now Up to President Truman

Washington three government owned plants used for alcohol production during the war would be turned over to the agricultural department under a bill passed by the senate and sent to the white house. They include Muscatine Iowa Kansas City Missouri and Omaha Nebraska with costs of 2 760 000 4 098 000 and 6 806 006 respectively. The Kansas City and Omaha plants were declared surplus in July 1947 while Muscatine continues under wartime lease. A house committee report says the plants would aid in handling and disposal of agricultural products and notes uncertainty about when they might be called upon again to produce alcohol for the government.

Council to Check Bus Proposals in Special Meeting

A special council meeting is set for Monday to review bids from two firms to replace the Omaha and Council Bluffs Railway. Council Bluffs Transit and Atlanta based Caroline Investment Company bid to take the franchise, with the existing operator under a 30 day contract. Council members call the field wide open and plan to inform the local firm its franchise is rejected.

Western allies announce a Friday night drastic currency reform in their zones to curb money in circulation and pave the way for ERP participation. Two Men Arrested for Robbery at Boone

Greene County Sheriff William Davis says two men Don Fahs 24 and Robert Gerlinger 23 from York PA held up 70 year old grocer Blaine Livingston on Thursday at the Bracery store, took $40 to $50, then fled in a Model A. Davis stopped the car after spotting Pennsylvania plates.

No New Polio Cases Reported At Mercy Hospital

Mercy hospital officials on Friday said no new polio cases had appeared since Wednesday afternoon. The 15 polio patients at Mercy are all reported to be satisfactory with continued observation and care underway.

Partly cloudy Saturday and warmer conditions on Sunday with highs in the mid 80s. Cooler Monday with showers or thunderstorms starting Sunday night then spreading across the state. Nebraska shows scattered showers west Saturday, generally fair Sunday, with more showers and storms Monday and Tuesday and fair Wednesday. Normal highs 85, lows 59. Total precipitation 8.07 inches, deficit 3.95 inches.

House Passes Draft Bill by 283-130 Vote

The House approved a delayed-action draft bill by 283 to 130, setting no one to be drafted before February 1. The measure, loaded with amendments, moves to the Senate where a filibuster could block it. The Senate had cleared a separate bill last week for an immediate two-year draft.

Iowa eight Republican representatives split 5 to 3 as the draft bill passed the House. LeCompte Cunningham and Talle voted for. Dolliver Gwynne Hoeven Jensen and Martin voted against. Rain Forecast Shifts as Showers Edge Into Five Day Outlook

Area forecasts call for spotty skies and warmer temperatures with mid 50s to mid 30s. Generous rains were forecast earlier but stalled in Kansas and Missouri. No rain reported Friday morning though a little may develop later. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin in the west Sunday night within a five day outlook. Council Bluffs recorded 0.23 inches Thursday as temperatures dipped to 63 this morning, with a 78 degree high noted in the area.

Government seeks dismissal of operators pension plea

Washington reports failed efforts to break the contract deadlock between John L. Lewis and the soft coal operators. Senator Bridges asked a federal court to dismiss the operators plea to block proposed $100 a month miner pensions funded by the United Mine Workers welfare fund. A hearing before Judge Goldsborough will decide if the pension payments can proceed, with Truman possibly stepping in if the talks collapse before June 30.

America Doubling Its Fighter Plane Strength in Europe

The United States plans to double its fighter strength in Europe by shifting a unit of jet planes from Panama to Germany. The 36th fighter wing from Albrook Field in the Canal Zone will depart around August 13, boosting Germany based forces to about 150 planes and marking the first organized jet interceptor strength in the region.

Ninth Candidate to Seek Nomination for Secretary of State

Des Moines reports that the Republican state convention may add a ninth candidate for secretary of state. George Prichard Jr., 25, from Unda, visited statehouse offices Thursday to announce his candidacy after winning Monona County’s GOP nomination for state representative in the primary and graduating from the University of Iowa days earlier. Eight candidates vied in the primary but none reached 35 percent, leaving the convention to select the nominee.

Motorist Dies in Auto Accident Near Crescent

William Golden a 42 year old painter from Missouri Valley died when his car overturned on highway 75 south of Crescent. Passenger Charles Carmichael 70 from Blair Nebraska was injured with a broken leg and shock. Both men were thrown from the car as it rolled two to three times. Carmichael treated at hospital. Golden body sent to Missouri Valley funeral homes. Golden survived by wife Dorothy and two children Cleta and Ira.
