Neola Girl Heads West Pot 4-H Clubs

Marin Weber of Neola was elected president of the West Pot 4-H Clubs. Spurance to Retire From Navy Command in July

Raymond A. Spurance, a Pacific fleet commander on duty, will retire July 1 after reaching the legal retirement age of 62 on July 3. He has served as president of the Naval War College at Newport and is among the last of his generation.

CHICAGO The Morgan interests opposed Ward and Company Thursday over policy and the leadership of Sewell Avery. Army refuses to change creek right of way plan

Mayor Sparks said the city must secure state land for Indian Creek by Saturday noon or flood control work this year is jeopardized. Study Panel to Review Chariton Flood Control Plan

United Air Lines Plane Crash Kills 37 Near Sunbury

United Air Lines said its flight 624 from San Diego to New York with 37 passengers and crew aboard forced down and apparently crashed near Sunbury Pennsylvania. Early reports indicate all aboard were killed. Kay Thorpe of Omaha listed as a passenger. her father is public relations director for Union Pacific. Destination listed as New York.

Missouri Valley Motorist Killed in Highway 15 Crash

One man was killed and a second seriously injured when a car ran off a curve on highway 15 four miles north of Counter Bluffs. William Gordon of Missouri Valley died at the scene. Charles Carmichael, also of Missouri Valley, suffered leg and body injuries and was taken to a Council Bluffs hospital. Earl Kinart of Modale said the car was traveling fast and rolled over several times. The death marked the eighth traffic fatality in Pottawattamie County for 1948.

Two New Polio Cases Reported in Mercy Area

Two more patients, a 27 year old man from Persia named Charles Kemmish and a four year old girl from Logan named Donna Boss, are hospitalised with infantile paralysis at Mersey hospital. This brings Mercy polio patients to 15 and total local cases to 30 since May 4.

Two Firms Seek Bus Franchise For Council Bluffs

Two firms, one locally owned, seek a Council Bluffs bus franchise. Council Bluffs Transit led by James R. Kiger and The Caroline Investment Company of Atlanta, Ga., both plan operations within 60 days of approval. Officials from both firms meet Thursday night to discuss terms as Omaha and Council Bluffs Railway contemplates a sale.
