Kerrigan May Join State Highway Commission

Reports from statehouse circles indicate F. R. Kerrigan a Dubuque Democrat may be appointed to the state highway commission by Gov. Beardsley. If named the appointment would take effect July 1 with a four year term, subject to Senate confirmation in the next session. Kerrigan serves as Dubuque county agent.

Towboat Alexander Sunk After Collision in River

In a Wednesday night incident the $850,000 towboat Alexander struck a rolling boulder and sank in the river. Captain Paul Rose reported the hull caved in with damages around $100,000. Two loaded gasoline barges were cut loose and sent to the Stanard Oil dock to aid the sinking craft. The boat rests on the river bottom with water reaching the main deck. Comedian Milton Berle remarried his former wife Joyce Matthews in New York last Thursday, following their Reno divorce on October 22, 1947.

Believe Bluffs Man Drowned in River

A man tentatively identified as Clarence Lee, found in a council bluffs house trailer, is believed to have drowned in the Missouri River near the Ak-Sar-Ben bridge. Omaha police report he fell from a government boat at about 4 a.m. near foot of Douglas Street. Lee suffered a severed hand and missing fingers on the other hand, according to investigators.

Pilot Preacher Plans Airborne Sermons Over Countryside

Gut J. Wetzel a 42 year old former test pilot turned Baptist minister, rigs a two seat plane with a loudspeaker and records to broadcast sermons from the air. He will glide at about 1000 feet over crowds this summer delivering remarks and religious music as he sees gatherings. Wetzel, long time pilot and Piper wartime instructor, studied at Bob Jones University and awaits his ministerial license. He is married with four children.

Great Western Train Hearing Set For July Thirteenth

The Iowa commerce commission schedules a July 13 hearing in Fort Dodge at 9:30 a m in the Webster county courthouse regarding Chicago Great Western's discontinuation of passenger trains Nos 31 and 32 on the Omaha Council Bluffs to Minneapolis run. Elgin Lad Killed in Car Fire Near Church

A two year old boy, Jimmy Winkler, died from burns suffered in a car blaze while his mother attended a church meeting at Alyria Methodist Church south of Elgin.
