Drowns in Farm Pond Boubs Near Here

Council Bluffs residents head the War Dads and auxiliary for next year. Ben E. Bierer was elected president at Mt. Pleasant convention. Mrs. William Dehse heads the auxiliary with others named from Keokuk Red Oak Iowa City Atlantic and Council Bluffs for 1949 activities and officers.

Ohio Woman Held in Poison Deaths Case

Preliminary hearing for Mrs. Mary Clay Watts, 43, held Tuesday morning over murders linked to the deaths of her husband Willis Watts and daughter Barbara Ann Watts. Barbara Ann died May 15 after months of illness. coroner ruled homicide. Pathology found mercury and a barbiturate in Barbara Ann and arsenic in Willis.

Admit Two Mild Polio Patients at Mercy Hospital

Two new polio cases, both listed as mild, were admitted to Mercy hospital on Sunday. The tally at Mercy rises to 17 patients, all reported as coming along fine by attendants. The new patients are Larry Wise, 3, of Council Bluffs, and Deane Walker, 10, of Missouri Valley. Admissions bring area cases since May to 33. Three polio patients were discharged Monday afternoon: Janeen Gisen, 10, Mondamin. Harriet Bargenquist, 21, Council Bluffs. and John Carlson, 14, Council Bluffs.

Truman vetoes social security bill amid clashes

President Truman vetoed a bill that would add 750,000 needy aged to Social Security, calling it inadequate and saying Congress has time to revise. The measure would boost federal contributions by 184 million dollars a year and add monthly benefits of five dollars to the needy aged and the blind and three dollars to dependents, with states matching funds. The House later approved fast-track changes to open coverage to 8.5 million more, though the Senate may not act before adjournment.

The Iowa Taxpayers association reports a rise in average school tax levies from 14 mills in 1941 to 21 mills in 1947, while property valuation grew only about 4 percent. Rural districts saw levies from 9.59 to 15.72 mills, and city town districts from 23.04 to 31.52 mills.

Former Iowa Man Dies in Minnesota

Joseph H. Allen, 77, former Des Moines mayor and 12 year Iowa state senator, died after a long illness in Minnesota. He fathered Byron G. Allen of Detroit Lakes, a 1944 Minnesota governor candidate and new Minnesota Democratic national committeeman. A Marshalltown native, he studied at the University of Iowa, practiced law and banking in Iowa, moved to Minnesota in 1938, and ran farms in western and central Minnesota. The body to be taken to Pocahontas, Iowa, for funeral rites after services at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Agreement Prevents Oak Ridge Strike at Lab

York to Retire From GOP Committee

Former Iowa GOP state chairman Willis B. York says he will retire from the central committee next month. He will not seek re election as sixth district committeeman at the post primary state convention in Des Moines July 23. He resigned as chairman last December citing party work as taking too much time from his business. S. R. Torgeson of Lake Mills is running to succeed York as sixth district committeeman.
