Colorado to Sponsor Conference on Crime

University of Colorado in Boulder plans a national conference on sex offenses and bizarre crimes announced by President Robert L. Stearns after two student deaths this school year. Roy F. Spore Jr. 19 was killed last Thursday near Boulder creek while defending his date. Theresa Foster was slain seven months earlier. Joe Sam Walker, 32, was convicted of second degree murder in Foster’s death. few clues remain in Spore case.

University of Town plans 120 medical students yearly

Des Moines reports two figures for expanding the state university medical school. Capital improvements and equipment would cost about 1.5 million dollars to raise annual enrollment from 90 to 120 students. Additional staff would add ongoing costs. the 1949 legislature sought more doctors for Iowa communities.

President Truman announced the resignation of Jozeph E. Jacobs as ambassador to Czechoslovakia. Elils Briggs of Maine, ambassador to Uruguay, was nominated to Prague, and Christian Pr Ravndel of Iowa, a career diplomat, was named to succeed Briggs in Montevideo.

A 14 year old babysitter beat a 6 year old boy to death with a piece of wood in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. State police Sgt. Stiles Smith provided the account, noting the incident involved a young caregiver and a fatal outcome.

City Council Acts to Tackle Major Street Work

City aldermen worked through a 13 hour session Monday to advance a large street improvement program. Preliminary steps cover eight streets with total costs around 229 thousand dollars, most projects funded by the city with only about eight thousand to be assessed to property owners. Food poisoning at Seymour packing picnic in Topeka

About 250 people were treated for suspected ptomaine poisoning after a Seymour packing company picnic in Topeka Kansas. One hundred emergency hospital treatments and around 50 home treatments were reported with no critical cases. Coroner H L Clark blamed a gisted dressing for the illness.

Ex-con escapes jail after Ky bank job arrest

An ex convict accused in a $19,000 Devil Kentucky bank robbery assaulted a deputy jailer and fled from custody Tuesday in Faducah Kentucky. William D. Messamore, 33, is one of three men held for the August 1948 robbery. He cut his way out of a second bullpen and escaped.

Storms and Floods Sweep Dallas Area

Storms and floods near Dallas county claimed at least ten lives and left one missing. Four drowned in Garland as Duck Creek overran, ten inches of rain soaked the area. A Frisco freight train hit a washout near Farmers Branch, a Denton county boy drowned, and three teens died near Fort Worth in a collision with a Missouri Pacific train during the same storm.

Meldrum Released on Bond After City Driving Incident

B Meldrum aged 41 of 335 North First street was arrested Monday night for driving while possibly intoxicated and was released Tuesday afternoon under a bond of 500. County Attorney Don Jackson said he had no time to review the case. Meldrum had rebuked Police Chief Altrock at a city council meeting and was ordered not to drive. Police said he refused to sit during booking and used profanity before being processed.

Drowned Man Dragged by Rampaging Farm Bull

Melvin Calhoun, 37, drowned Monday after the bull he wrestled dragged him into the Indian River near Theresa New York. Calhoun and two companions were corralling cows when he grabbed the animal by the horns in an attempt to drive it back. The bull swam toward the far bank while Calhoun sank and vanished in midstream despite his grip loosening.
