War Dads and Auxiliary Elect Leaders in Iowa

Council Bluffs man Ben E. Bierer was elected president of the Iowa War Dads at Mt. Pleasant convention. Mrs. William Dohse was chosen president of the auxiliary. Officers include Harry Robinson Keokuk and Roy Foster Red Oak as vice presidents, William Cannon Iowa City as third VP, Ernest Jacobs treasurer, with a secretary to be named. Auxiliary officers include Mrs. James Campbell Keokuk as vice president, Mrs. Bierer as treasurer, Mrs. Swolley Atlantic as historian, and Mrs. Carmichael Council Bluffs as secretary. Council members-at-large include Mrs. C. BE. Smith Council Bluffs and Mrs. Imo Wise Atlantic.

Ohio Woman Held as Suspected Slayer

Preliminary hearing for Mrs. Mary Clay Watts, 43, held in Cincinnati Tuesday morning on murder charges related to the deaths of her husband Willis Watts and daughter Barbara Ann Watts. Barbara Ann died May 15 after months of illness. coroner ruled homicide. Pathologist reports found mercury and a barbiturate in Barbara Ann, arsenic linked to Willis Watts.

Admit Two Mild Polio Patients at Mercy Hospital

Two new polio cases, listed as mild, were admitted to Mercy hospital Sungay, bringing total polio patients there to 17 and 33 cases in the area since May. The new patients are Larry Wise, 3, of Council Bluffs, and Dean Vallier, 10, of Missouri Valley. Three polio patients were discharged Monday afternoon: Julene Olsen, 10, Mondamin. Mrs. Harriet Bargenquist, 21, and John Carlson, 84, both of Council Bluffs.

War Contracts Renegotiation Act Upheld by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Monday upheld the constitutionality of the War Contracts Renegotiation Act. Three firms challenged the law in recovering excess profits from World War II contracts, including Southern Fireproofing of Cincinnati seeking 27019 and General Products of San Francisco claiming 113709, plus Boston's Combing Company seeking 15882. Justice Burton wrote the ruling, with Justice Jackson dissenting on the Lichter and Pownall points and Justice Douglas urging a hearing in other courts on Lichter’s actual circumstances. Reports Big Increase in Iowa School Levies

DES MOINES The Iowa Taxpayers association said the average Iowa school mill levy rose from 14 mills in 1941 to 21 mills in 1947 while property valuation grew only about 4 percent. Rural districts saw levies rise from 9.59 to 15.72 mills, and city and town areas from 23.04 to 31.52 mills in the same period.

House Readies to Iowa Lions Add Pass Draft Bill to New District

The rules committee voted to send the draft bill to the house floor for debate later this week. Army authorities estimate about 200000 unmarried non veterans would be drafted the first year.
