Clearing Skies After Weekend Downpour Across Iowa

A Sunday night to Monday rain left 0.73 inches in the area, with overcast skies giving way to clearing by night. Temperatures dip to the mid 30s Tuesday promises partly cloudy mild conditions, while towns report damage from lightning and widespread rainfall totals across Iowa, including 3.31 inches in Ringgold County and high city rain in Atlantic, Shell Rock, Creston, and Sioux City. Mrs Gertrude Schwartz, 34, of Los Angeles, suffered heat stroke in a car en route to Detroit. She was treated at Mercy Hospital after police assistance.

Methodism picks new district superintendents in Iowa

The Rev. Edward O. Cooley of Nevada Iowa is named superintendent of the Council Bluffs district at the Muscatine conference. The Rev. Lauren D. Thomas of Atlantic becomes superintendent of the Burlington district. Cooley moves to Cornelia Bluffs after serving in Nevada since 1943 and earlier at Audubon and Coon Rapids. The conference also names Rev. W F. Army Chaplain and Mother Die in Highway Crash Near Logan

Captain Hugo Waldschmidt, 36, an army chaplain at Fort Riley Kansas, and his mother Martha Waldschmidt, about 55, of Lincoln Nebraska, were killed when their auto struck a concrete bridge on highway 30 two miles northeast of Logan at 2 30 am Monday. Waldschmidt's sister Mia Helen Dejtz, also of Lincoln, was injured and taken to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs in fair condition. The 3 year old son survived uninjured. Sheriff C A Bullis, state highway patrol and Coroner Harold Hennessey said mud and clay on the paving caused the skid that led to the crash. coroner ruled no inquest. The front end was crushed, and the car pinned to the bridge. Authorities believed the captain was returning his mother and sister to Lincoln on leave. Bodies placed at Bolton-Ranston funeral home in Logan for transfer.

Four Iowans Killed in Traffic Mishaps

Albert Schoettner Jr. 17 of Garrizon died in a head on collision near Van Horne. Oswald Sanderson 23 near Waukon died from injuries after falling from a car at Decorah. Wayne Howard Fritz 28 of Pleasant Valley killed in a two car crash on a county road near Davenport. Mrs. George de Moss 78 died after being struck by a car in Jefferson. $4 065 000 Loan to Iowa REA Co op

The Rural Electrification Administration announced a $4,065,000 loan to the Central Iowa Power Cooperative of Cedar Rapids. The funds will install a steam generating unit at Cedar Rapids plant, complete by late 1949 or early 1950, build 30 miles of 115 kilovolt line from Cedar Rapids to Hale, 120 miles of 33 kilovolt transmission lines, and construct a substation at Hale Iowa.
