SIOUX FALLS 5 B 7 Sen Robert A Taft of Ohio won South Dakota's 14 Republican convention delegates by a 613 vote margin over Gen Dwight D Eisenhower in the official county canvass Saturday night. AP tally from eight county auditors shows Taft 64 617 Eisenhower 64 004 with state canvass to revise possibly late next week. Taft carried about 50 241 percent of the total vote to Eisenhower's 49 764.
Washington reports cautious optimism as steel industry officials and CIO striking workers led by Philip Murray resume talks in the White House cabinet room. Both sides kept silent after an all day session and agreed to return Sunday at 9 a.m. CST, signaling potential progress toward resolving a six month wage dispute and the six day nationwide strike.
Nine outstanding Methodist leaders will be among the 5 000 persons expected in Council Bluffs this week for the Iowa Des Moines conference. Broadway Methodist church hosts the conference, governing body of Southern Iowa Methodism. The Rev. Gerald E Bissbee notes the democratic nature of the church and that two thirds of these conferences must ratify general conference legislation before it can take effect. One of the region’s largest conventions, the Methodist conference seeks lodging as commercial housing fills. An appeal requests homes open to visitors with a $7.06 nightly rate. The event runs through next Sunday with speakers including Dr. Umphrey Lee, Edmund Hall, Herman Weil Jr., Dr. Harold C. Case, Dr. Herbert E. Stotts, Dr. Eddy Asivatham, Charles Wesley Brashares, and Allen Whitfield delivering talks and leading sessions at various venues and times.
Acting City Manager Kennard Gardiner outlined a citywide surfacing program allowing homeowners to buy a serviceable street for ten dollars. The plan shares costs 50-50 between city and property owners, with labor provided by the city. Owners petition, obtain estimates, and collect cash locally to fund a focused resurfacing day in a dense block area.
In Harlan Iowa two separate telephone companies supply service with no interconnection. Farmers Mutual Telephone Company and Town State Telephone provide about 1,300 and 1,200 subscribers respectively, with 350 residences and many businesses in Harlan. Rural customers number 330, and long distance lines enter via Iowa State. Residents accept the system but outsiders find it perplexing.
Just a Youngster APLINGTON Tennessee Mrs Heyo Tres has reached her 100th birthday and shares celebration with sister Mrs L B Popkes who marked her 100th on December 27. Mrs Frey’s anniversary fell on Saturday as the family observes the age milestones.
State agents aided by local police raided the Dubuque Elks convention Saturday night and seized liquor. Assistant County Attorney Donald Part led the raid with two state agents and six local officers. The warrant, signed by Justice Irvin Freiburger of Mosalen township, Dubuque County, was executed as about 80 to 90 Elks members attended the lodge.
An 18 year old Des Moines graduate drowned Saturday while swimming in a southeast Des Moines gravel pit. Don McElroy disappeared in water estimated 10 to 20 feet deep. Companion Ernest McDougal attempted rescue but could not reach him.
W J Hamilton of Marion receives a music degree at Coe College centennial commencement after 24 years of pursuing the goal. He previously attended Sigourney High School and quit during depression, later enrolling at Coe in 1949 to become a band director and will lead bands in Blairstown this fall while teaching vocals and PMA administration. Separately, Des Moines reports a federal allocation of 1 750 000 for farm restoration along the Missouri flood area, with meetings in Council Bluffs to outline agency responsibilities and fund use including PMA and SCS programs.
Indiana Republicans cheered as Senator Robert A. Taft secured 82 instructed delegates and a projected Chicago convention edge of about 88 votes over General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Indiana party solidified support for Taft while Eisenhower’s rivals faced uncertain, evolving commitments ahead of the July 7 convention.
