Launch New Mail Service Honored By Postmaster General

Washington Postmaster General Summerfield launched the new certified mail service as a regular postal operation. Robert Bancroft, 39, a Washington letter carrier and Watertown South Dakota native, served as model for the stamp design. The ceremony celebrated proof of delivery for items not of monetary value, priced at 15 cents plus regular postage, with six months record at the local office.

Three Die, Three Injured In Dakota Car Crash

Vermillion South Dakota report says two cars collided on Highway 50 east of Vermilion Sunday night. Killed at once were Joe Kaiser 50 farmer near Vermilion and Evelyn Bowen 50 of Atlanta Georgia. Cris Bowen 34 died in a Sioux City hospital Monday. Bowens two children Tris 9 and Mara 8 were in critical condition at the hospital.

Showers Forecast Continue Across Southwest Iowa

Weather outlook for Southwest Iowa calls for light showers and partly cloudy skies on Tuesday with a cool start. Monday night lows near 30, daytime highs around 60s, and a recent Lake Manawa rise of four inches from pumping and heavy rains. Tornado touched down near Spillville causing property damage but no injuries as rains persist along eastern and western Iowa borders.

Thurston Urges Cuts in Foreign Aid to Aid Vets at Spanish War Meet

Lloyd Thurston, national commander, told United Spanish War Veterans and Auxiliary delegates at Hotel Chieftain that the U S should spend less on foreign gifts and more on veterans benefits. He warned that veterans oppose secondary status in the economy and lamented benefits causing treasury imbalance. Wrongfully Fired High Court Rules

The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that Dr. John P. Peters was wrongfully fired under a now discarded loyalty program. The court declined to decide whether his rights to face accusers were violated, a ruling with potential impact on Eisenhower era security measures. Peters, Yale Medicine professor, was ousted as a U.S. Public Health Service consultant in May 1933, three months before the administration change. Under both programs accused employees faced no right to confront their accusers.

Eight Hurt In Missouri Valley Highway 30 Crash

Eight persons hospitalized after a pickup and car collision three miles northeast of Missouri Valley on Highway 30. Ed Trecek of Logan drove the pickup after a car stopped ahead, sending the oncoming car driven by Robert Shanks to collide. Shanks, 21, Lincoln Air Force Base, was transferred from Mercy Hospital with a concussion and injuries. Trecek, 36, may have head injury and a broken left arm. his wife Marjorie, 34, suffered facial bruises and a knee injury. Trecek children Diane 12, Joe 10, Ed Jr. 14, Susan 7 sustained various injuries. Dixie Halverson, 18, Mason City, also injured with facial cuts and bruises.

Two Lowans Die In Auto Accidents

Two Iowa residents died in separate crashes. Donald Bruce Fry, 22, of near Wairfield, perished when his car left a gravel road near Stockport, Van Buren County. Mrs. Alex Fahan, 45, of near Yetter, died after a two vehicle collision on Highway 20 west of Sac City. her husband, 47, was in serious condition and a couple in the other car, Mr and Mrs Henry Pelletier of San Francisco, were in fair condition.

Mixture Of Memories For the At West Point

President Eisenhower visited West Point to mark the 11th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. He and his 1915 classmates recalled both the cadet days and the 1944 Allied crossing into France. Adenauer Quits Post as Foreign Minister in Bonn

Bonn Germany Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on Monday relinquished the foreign minister post to focus on West German rearmament. He urged President Theodor Heuss to appoint Heinrich von Brentano as foreign minister and proposed elevating Theodor Blank to cabinet rank as the first defense minister. Adenauer also notes he assumed the foreign post in March 1951 as West Germany began diplomatic relations.

Club 100 Destroyed By Fire in Des Moines

DES MOINES Club 100, a wartime Des Moines night spot, burned to the ground Sunday morning in a spectacular fire of undetermined origin. The club had not operated as a night club since 1946 when padlocked as a liquor nuisance, with Dave Fidler listed as operator.

Enroll For Summer School Figures Grow At Midday

About 165 students enrolled for summer school with more registrations expected as the day continues. Classes start at 7 30 a m and run six weeks at Washington School. Elementary and high school students fill the sessions with Rex D Nyenfritz directing at Abraham Lincoln and Mervill Brown at Thomas Jefferson. Instrumental music courses reach 237 students with 137 at Lincoln and 100 at Jefferson.
