Three Die, Two Children Critically Hurt In Dakota Crash

Vermillion South Dakota: Sunday night two car collision on Highway 30 east of Vermillion left three dead and two Bowens children, ages 8 and 4, in critical condition at a Sioux City hospital. Victims include Joe Kaiser 50 and Evelyn Bowen 31 of Atlanta Georgia. Evelyn’s husband Cris B Bowen 34 died from injuries earlier Monday in Sioux City.

Showers Forecast as Lake Manawa Rises in Iowa

Light showers continue across Southwest Iowa Monday night with cooler Tuesday highs near 50. Lake Manawa rose four inches in the past week due to pumping and heavy rains, now covering mud flats on the west side. Berwick notes eight inches since pumping began. A tornado struck near Spillville causing property damage on two farms but no injuries. Weather notes include scattered rain in eastern and western Iowa with highs ranging from the upper 60s to low 70s and varying overnight lows.

Mercy Flight Aids Corning Blood Transfer by CAP

Civil Air Patrol and Red Cross coordinated a mercy flight Sunday to Corning for a Rosary Hospital patient. Plasma traveled from the Omaha Red Cross Center to Council Bluffs Airport by police escort, then to Corning by CAP Lt. N. J. Sulentie. The CAP plane was loaned by airport manager Harry McCandless.

Thurston Urges More Help For Vets Over Foreign Aid

Lloyd Thurston of Osceola told 215 Iowa delegates at Hotel Chieftain that the United States should spend less on aid to foreign countries and more for veterans benefits. He, national commander of the United Spanish War Veterans, warned that veterans of all wars must not be second to other budget needs. The three day convention opened with a memorial service and features a banquet to be addressed by Gov. Leo Hoegh.

Wrongfully Fired, High Court Rules

The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that Dr. John P. Peters was wrongfully fired under the government loyalty program then in use. The court did not decide if his due process rights were violated when he was denied the right to face his accusers, a question that could affect the Eisenhower era security program and its successors. Peters, Yale medicine professor, was ousted as a special consultant to the Public Health Service in May 1952, after the administration transition but before loyalty reforms. Neither program allowed accused employees to confront their accusers.

Lt Col Edwin Heller Wynnewood Pa remains for 10 to 12 days for physiotherapy after a leg injury from a bailout over North Korea. Fischer, a Korean War double jet ace, described a bluff used during capture. He parachuted after his MIG was damaged near the Yalu River April 7 1953.

Eight Are Hurt On Highway 30 Collision Near Mis souri Valley

Eight people were hospitalized after a pickup and car collided three miles northeast of Missouri Valley on Highway 30. Ed Trecek, 36, and his wife Marjorie, 34, led the pickup crash injuries with the Trecek children among those hurt. Robert Shanks, 21, of Lincoln Air Force Base, suffered concussion and leg injuries. Dixie Halverson, 18, Mason City, had facial cuts and bruises. Sheriff Sam Strain investigated the p.m. crash. Ed Tiecek of Logan reportedly braked when the car ahead stopped, causing the skidding impact.

Two Iowans Die In Auto Accidents

Two Iowans died in separate crashes Sunday. Donald Bruce Fry, 2, of near Fairfield, was killed when his car ran off a gravel road in Van Buren County. Mrs. Essex Fahan, 45, of near Yetter, died from injuries in a two car collision on Highway 20 west of Sac City, with her husband 47 in serious condition. A couple in the other car, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pelletier of San Francisco, were in fair condition.

Eyes Begin Revision Of City Codes In Des Moines

Mayor William Knox indicated on Monday that the city is eyeing revisions to several city codes including building, plumbing, and zoning. Enrollments Hit Summer School Milestone at Washington

About 165 students have enrolled for six week summer programs at Washington School. Morning sessions run 7:30 to noon six days weekly.
