Wrongfully Fired, High Court Rules
The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that Dr. John P. Peters was wrongfully fired under the government loyalty program then in use. The court did not decide if his due process rights were violated when he was denied the right to face his accusers, a question that could affect the Eisenhower era security program and its successors. Peters, Yale medicine professor, was ousted as a special consultant to the Public Health Service in May 1952, after the administration transition but before loyalty reforms. Neither program allowed accused employees to confront their accusers.
