Franey testifies to the House Un-American Activities Committee that Andrei Schevchenko, a purchasing agent for the Soviet government, sought wartime jet engine and swept-back wing details from Bell Aircraft with the FBI watching. On his 100th birthday Jackson W Bowdish of Marion received an honorary bachelor of philosophy degree from Cornell College Mount Vernon. President Russell D Cole presented the degree at Bowdish’s home due to his long confinement to a chair. Bowdish attended Cornell Academy from 1868 to 1872 but left before graduation to take a job.

Home Fire Fatal to Six Brothers

A west Hazelton house fire in Hazelton Pa. Monday morning killed six brothers and left their parents, Mr and Mrs Steven Gatrick, in critical condition at Hazleton State Hospital. The blaze gutted the Gatrick home as investigators began assessing its cause.

Sioux City Trucker Critically Injured in Highway Crash

George E. Arndt, 21, Sioux City, was critically injured Monday when his truck crashed into a ditch two miles south of LeMars on Highway TS and caught fire. Arndt, en route to Spencer with a load of fresh fruit, reportedly had a tie rod break on the steering gear. Sheriff Frank Scholer said the cab and motor were destroyed by flames.

The senate judiciary committee approved an anti lynching bill introduced by Senator Ferguson. No roll call vote was taken after a closed meeting. Onawa Navy Veteran Drowns in Blue Lake

Gordon Baker 23 year old navy veteran drowned Sunday in Blue Lake west of Onawa. He reportedly swam with a small nephew who later said Clark went under and was not seen again. No lifeguard at the lake. Clothes found at the bathhouse and body recovered at 1 am Monday after authorities were notified.

To Open Bids on Hospital Project
