Ames Man Heads Iowa Elks Clubs

Harry J. Schmidt of Ames a professor at Iowa State college was elected president of the Iowa Elks association at the convention. Other officers include Z. Z. White Morse Kinney Thomas Sinnett Sanford H. Schmalz Mike Lee and Ed Kane. A site for the 1950 state convention will be chosen at Sunday's session. Memorial services set for 11 a.m.

Dragnet Snares Eight Prisoners

Eight of the 14 long term convicts who cut their way out of West Virginia's old state penitentiary were recaptured Saturday. Planes, jeeps and road blocks were used to locate the six still at large. The breakout occurred before dawn Friday. Two more escapees, Everett Roble and Elmer Tichnell, both 28, from Parkersburg, were captured near Belpre by Police Chief Earl W. Walker. Mike Ables, 24, and Holly Starcher were spotted near Ponhattan, Ohio, Ables shot in the shoulder by an Ohio trooper. Three others were returned to the penitentiary after storekeeper alerts and hunger pains.

Carroll County Crash Kills Two

A light Piper cub crashed on the Perry Prueitt farm near Ralston killing two men on Saturday. Randy Hernan of Ralston, about 28, identified, and an unnamed companion died in the fire. a coroner’s inquest ruled death accidental.
