Girl Recovers From Rare Heart Ailment

Karen Ash, age 4, of Muscatine, returned home after a delicate operation to correct a rare heart ailment at a Rochester Minnesota clinic on May 22. Her recovery was rapid and she was described as happy and healthy by her parents Harold and Mrs. Aps. The trip and operation were funded by a Kiwanis club driven subscription campaign.

Accidental Death Verdict At Oakland

A coroner's jury ruled the May 18 traffic death of Harry Cary 26 as accidental. Cary a Griswold trucker was killed when thrown from his truck on highway 6 two miles west of Lewis junction in Pottawattamie County. Washington report shows W L Beck of the commerce department told a House appropriations sub committee that the United States will have more farm machinery next year than this year or prior to the war. He estimated a total $1.625 billion supply for the next fiscal year with exports to other regions at $351 million and European relief program shipments at $124 million.

Still Hope For Control Program

City officials voiced optimism on the army flood control plan worth 2 5 million dollars while warning that changes could raise costs. Maj. Gen. Lewis A. Pick met with Tivaman leaders and conservationists to discuss Lake Manawa Indian Creek issues. A second meeting is set for Monday at Gen. Pick s office. The delay stems from state land needed for creek right of way also controlled by the Towa Conservation Commission which has resisted release. Conservationists fear drainage and sewage contamination if the lake is altered. Gen Pick said the proposed measures should not jeopardize Lake Manawa s water levels.

John K. Steinbaugh 37, principal at Abraham Lincoln high since 1946, to resign and move to Torrance California for a summer USC program. He will assume the Torrance post late July. Protest Compliance With New Labor Law

Four members of the CIO United Farm Equipment Workers international executive board resigned as the board voted to comply with non-communist Taft Hartley act phases. Grant Oakes, the union president, said the compliance came after a rank and file referendum and was done with reluctance and repugnance. The four members stated they left rather than consent to an unconstitutional invasion of civil liberties and limits on members’ right to freely elect their officers without employer dictate.

Nebraska Flier Injured In Crash

Lonnie Bede of Valentine Nebraska was critically injured when his light plane crashed during takeoff from a farm runway northwest of White River South Dakota. He was taken by ambulance to a Valentine hospital and later collapsed after walking fifty feet despite a back injury. Bede, about 45, managed an electrical plant in Valentine and had been on business at the William Jensen farm where the crash occurred. Jensen cited a strong south wind as a possible factor as the plane began its ascent.

No Bluffs Stop For Presidential Special

President Truman’s special train, as tentatively planned, will arrive at Council Bluffs Saturday at 7 15 a.m. over the Northwestern railroad. Plans do not call for a stop in Council Bluffs. The train will proceed to Omaha where the president will attend the 35th Division World War I reunion. A large replica of the presidential seal will be the only identifying mark on the rear car.
