Sumner Pastor Re elected Lutheran District Leader

Des Moines reports new priority assignments for federal hospital construction aid listing 84 Iowa communities. Guthrie Center and Missouri Valley top the order, with Ames and Marshalltown also among the notable entries. Top Chicago G-Man Placed in Custody on Contempt Court

Chicago’s top FBI official George R. McSwain was ordered jailed for contempt after refusing to surrender Roger Touhy era records. Judge John P. Playgrounds Will Open on June 20

The city’s recreational department will start its supervised summer program June 20 at 14 playgrounds. Supt. Forrest W. Wakefield announced. Activities include group games, storytelling, special events, movies and day camping with hours 1 PM to 8 PM Mondays and 10 AM to 8 PM Tuesday through Friday. Designated playgrounds serve children ages 5 to 10.

Hiss Credited With Turning Over State Dept Documents

Whittaker Chambers testified that Alger Hiss handed him state department documents. He said he photographed the papers and gave the films to J Peters, alleged head of the communist underground in the United States. The exchange occurred as Hiss faced charges of lying to a federal grand jury.

West Hands Over Four Power Plan for Berlin

Paris, The west presented to Russia Thursday its plan to restore four power control in Berlin. A French informant said the United States Britain and France proposed terms were laid before the Soviet union during a 90 minute foreign ministers council meeting, the shortest of the ten day session. The ministers will meet again Friday in a secret session to address east west disputes over Berlin. They agree only in principle that the divided German city should be reunited under a single governing body. The talks touched on a Western proposal to limit veto power in the four power body and a hint that the Russians might accept trimming the komandatura area of authority. Western delegates led by Secretary of State Dean Acheson pressed for modification of the rule that all decisions require unanimous consent.

Droge Hearing Set for June 7

Preliminary hearing for Mrs. Henry F. Droge, 50, of Woodsbury Avenue, on a charge of assault with intent to murder, tentatively set for June 7 in municipal court. The charge follows the May 24 shooting of Arthur W. Carter, a seedman, at his home amid estate settlement business disputes. Mrs. Droge is free on a $2,500 bond.

Elks State Convention Sees About 2000 Attendees

Some 2000 Elks are expected in town Friday for Iowa Elks three day state convention opening events. Registration runs 10 a m to 10 p m at the Elks club with stag parties and uptown club gatherings. Fremont School Job to Dwight Fellows

Dwight D. Fellows, superintendent of Walnut schools for six years, is named Fremont county superintendent of schools and will assume duties in mid June. He succeeds Milas Aleda Laird who recently resigned and plans to move with his family to Sidney when housing is found. Fellows previously headed Walnut schools since 1943 and was a Hastings superintendent before that. He has served as Commercial club president and taught the Presbyterian Sunday school class, and was choir director of the church for several years.

Barkley to keynote Des Moines farm center meeting

Lenox Youth Dies of Accident Near Creston

Melvin Battrem, 17, of Lenox, died in a Creston hospital Wednesday night from injuries from a Sunday night automobile crash on Highway 25 near Kent. The car rolled several times after losing control.

Des Moines Union Votes to End Strike by June 11

A Des Moines union votes 416 to 15 to authorize ending the strike over streetcar service.
