Army flood control plan at Indian Creek drew council clash

Mayor George B. Sparks named a five member council committee to revive the army flood control project at Lake Manawa despite a 5 to 3 defeat of a resolution asking the Iowa Conservation Commission to back a new Indian Creek channel. Col Louis W Prentiss warned plans would be delayed, possibly missing this summer, if the project is paused.

Shenandoah Girls Injured in Route 83 Crash Near Stennett

Two Shenandoah teenagers suffered serious injuries when their car failed to make a turn and struck an embankment two miles northwest of Stennett. Darlene Lincoln, 15, had a fractured pelvis and severe facial injuries while Eula Webster, 14, sustained a fractured breastbone. They were hospitalized in Shenandoah. Six others in the convertible, driven by Howard Briggs of Red Oak, escaped with minor cuts and were treated at Murphy Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.

Two New Polio Cases Reported in Iowa

Two new infantile paralysis patients were treated at Mercy hospital bringing southwestern Iowa’s total to 25 cases since May 4. The patients are Harriet Bargenquest 21 of 402 Twenty‑sixth Avenue and Joseph Beck 51 of Shelby both improving. War Dads plan an open meeting at 141 West Broadway Wednesday at 8 p.m. with 20 civic clubs invited. Mayor Mabrey of Carter Lake said a meeting will be held Friday at 8 p.m. to discuss polio actions with Council Bluffs officials.

Lewis Case Decision Delayed To Friday

Justice Goldsborough postponed the ruling on ordering John L. Lewis to bargain with the Southern Coal Producers association until Friday. He mediated by arranging a conference between Lewis attorney Welly K. Hopkins and Southern coal group lawyer John C. Gall to resolve differences before then. He warned a coal strike next month would be a national tragedy.

Ten Summer Playgrounds Open Here June 28

City Recreation Supt. Forrest W. Wakefield announced that ten supervised summer playgrounds will open June 28. Grounds stay open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tue–Fri and 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturdays with a second set 1–7 p.m. Mon–Fri. Wakefield urged volunteers to contact his office as more male directors are needed for a variety of activities.

Explosion Wrecks Processing at Union Oil Refinery

A massive blast at the Union Oil refinery in Wilmington California damaged a processing still. Flames rose hundreds of feet as firefighters fought the blaze for about 45 minutes. one man was reported injured and officials said they would review details after a full checkup.

Otto Oakes age 44, currently superintendent at North Platte Nebraska, is the 15th candidate for the Council Bluffs schools superintendent post. President Thomas McMillen says two more have shown interest but have not applied. Oakes is a Peru State College graduate with further study at Denver and Nebraska universities and has served in North Platte four years.

Veteran abstractor dies in Atlantic after heart attack

Bert, 68, longtime Atlantic abstractor for 50 years, died suddenly at his home Tuesday night. Services set for Friday at 4 p.m. at Ayflor Funeral Home. He lived in Cass County all his life and is survived by his widow a daughter and two brothers.

House Passes Six Billion Army Bill for Peacetime Forces

The House approved a peacetime Army Air Force appropriation of 6.509 billion dollars for the next fiscal year, by a 346 to 2 vote. Opponents were Rep. Marcaroni and Rep. Carroll County Lad Fatally Injured in Auto Crash

Billy Reiff age nine, son of Ed and Mrs. Reiff of Carroll county, was fatally struck Wednesday afternoon by a car driven by George Dinges of Odebolt on highway 71 five miles north of Carroll. An inquest was ordered by Carroll county coroner Dr. J Lawrence Cochran. This marks the fourth traffic fatality in Carroll county this year and second child killed on highway 71.
