Mrs Mackland Named Master Homemaker in Iowa 1951

Mrs Wayne Mackland of Crescent is one of six Iowa farm women chosen as master of farm homemakers for 1951. The award was sponsored by Wallaces' Farmer and Iowa Homestead with a luncheon honor in Des Moines. Other winners include Mrs Keith Barnes of Brighton Mrs Walter Neubaum of Barnum Mrs Tor Kil Aure of Bode Mrs Howard Schnitter of Delhi and Mrs Z M Phelps of Hillsboro.

Navy officer fired for hot letter targets Acheson views

Former Lt. William H. Evans of Edgewater Maryland says in a hot letter to Alfred Kohlberg that the State Department is pro red and that Americans are dying due to a pro red administration. Admiral Sherman says shipmates did not share Evans views and Evans was dismissed after a Navy review.

Priest credited with saving youth on hotel ledge

In Boston a white-haired priest, Father Joseph P. Curran of St. Stephen's, is credited with saving 18-year-old Albert Thomas, an Army private AWOL from Fort Dix, who clung to a hotel ledge for 92 minutes on the ninth floor of the Touraine. Curran persuaded him to come inside after several failed attempts by others.

Gas Truck Crashes Into Kellogg Plant Killing Driver

A gas delivery truck plowed into the Kellogg Cereal plant in Omaha damaging the structure and igniting a blaze that killed the driver and possibly a passenger. About 25 workers fled as flames consumed the truck and building. Three people were hospitalized for minor injuries. Fire Capt. Dan Mulcahey identified the driver as 27 year old Robert Woodworth of Omaha.

Air pioneer Blair calls polar flight easy for lone crossing

New York, Charles Blair Jr the first to fly solo over the north pole in a single engine plane says the trip was awfully easy but he does not want to repeat it. He flew 3,300 miles from Bardu Norway to Fairbanks Alaska in 10 hours 27 minutes aboard a converted F 51 Mustang nicknamed the flying gas tank. Eight hours later he embarked on a 3 450 mile non stop hop to New York arriving at 2 40 p.m CST Wednesday.

Explosion Traps 14 Miners in German Mine Shaft

An explosion trapped 14 German miners in a burning mine shaft in Hamm Herringen on Thursday. Rescue workers abandoned hope of rescuing any of the trapped men as 20 miners were saved, four of them critically injured.

MacArthur’s Worldly Goods Catch Up With Him

New York dispatch reports Gen Douglas MacArthur’s worldly goods totaling 49 tons arriving aboard the naval transport C. C. Ballou from Tokyo. Included are three private cars and 43 pieces of baggage for the MacAr thurs, plus the private tutor of Arthur and four dogs. Mrs Phyllis Gibbons accompanies four Tokyo guard members and meets Mrs MacArthur and young Arthur at the pier. The group returns to the Waldorf Astoria where Mrs Gibbons will stay temporarily.

Taylor Bridge Work Plans Survey Considered by County Board

The county board of supervisors will study four survey plans for the Taylor bridge project located a mile and a half northwest of Avoca. The bridge was washed out nine years ago and has not been replaced. after completing surveys, the board will decide on a solution.

Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, 85, archbishop of Philadelphia since 1918, died in his residence after a stroke. He celebrated mass earlier the day marking the 61st anniversary of his ordination, and remained active in duties as dean of the American church.

A Thursday morning fire at the Farmer Elevator Service Co in Des Moines caused an estimated 10000 dollars in damage. The blaze started when lightning struck the electrical system. No injuries are reported.

Two Brilliant Brothers in Juvenile Home at Toledo

In Toledo Iowa two wards of the state aged 15 and 13, brothers, show exceptional mental powers with IQs of 160 and 156 learned during a routine state psychologist examination. Their parents are divorced, the father remarried and left the state, the mother cannot provide a suitable home. Supt Ladd notes they appear normal and well at the home but would thrive in a private setting with better guidance. A farmer offered care, but doubt exists about farm life suitability. The older boy aspires to baseball, the younger to aviation but teachers urge a teaching path for him due to fluent speech.

More Rain Due In Bluffs Area After Memorial Day Storms

After a sunny Memorial day thunderstorms brought 1.24 inches of rain in Council Bluffs late Wednesday night and early Thursday. More thundershowers were forecast for Thursday night and Friday with highs in the upper 80s Thursday and near 60 Friday morning. The weatherman noted cold air aloft driving the unsettled pattern and warned of a 51 to 60 degree dip in the coming days. Lightning struck a home in Billings, with injuries. street crews reported paving damage from the deluge and widespread rain across the state. Memorial Day crowds surged at Lake Manawa and Playland, with thousands at state park openings and large turnout for auto racing and local clubs.

Three Fort Dodge Crewmen Dead in Woodbine Rail Wreck

Three Ilinois Central railroad crewmen from Fort Dodge are believed dead after a locomotive and 15 freight cars plunged through a flood weakened trestle near Woodbine at dawn. Memorial Day Toll Hits New Low Across Nation

The Memorial Day death toll was unusually light with 128 violent deaths recorded, including 30 highway fatalities. Officials called the overall figure a marvelous achievement as drowning and other accidents added to the toll, staying well under safety council estimates.

Body Identified As That of Ralph Hager

A body identified from papers as Ralph Wallace Hager of 2932 Avenue G was recovered from the Missouri river near Plattsmouth Nebraska. Cass County Sheriff Tom Solomon identified the remains from an honorable discharge folder found in a pocket. Hager, a music store employee, had been missing since February. County Coroner Henry Meyer was en route to Plattsmouth to investigate. The report also notes delays in the disbarment hearing of local attorney Meldrum with a three judge panel.
