Nation records 413 deaths over three Memorial Day days

The Associated Press reports 413 people died in accidents during the three day Memorial Day weekend marking the traditional summer opening. Traffic crashes drownings fires falls airplane mishaps and other accidents caused the toll. The survey covered Friday afternoon to last midnight across time zones. In Vatican City Pope Pius XX met Myron Taylor, Truman’s representative, in a 30 minute private audience.

Milk Price Cut From Mar Ahballiewa Dairies

Mar Ahballiewa dairies announced a one cent reduction in milk price effective Wednesday. The new price is 17 cents per quart.

Refuse to Mediate Berlin Rail Strike

Berlin reports the Russian controlled railway management refused to mediate the 11 day long walkout. Lord Mayor Ernst Reuter offered to discuss a settlement but Willy Kretkemeyer Reichsbahn president rejected it. The Reichsbahn recognizes only the communist free German trade union as legal bargaining agent for the strikers.

McClelland Lad Dies in Tractor Accident Near Mills Farm

Eugene Mills 19, son of Mr and Mrs Gus Mills of McClelland, was killed when a tractor toppled 15 feet into a creek. He was pinned under water and died of concussion. Funeral arrangements were made at Woodring in Council Bluffs. Survived by parents, a brother and three sisters. He would have entered senior year at Underwood High School.

West Votes Down Russian Proposal

Paris reports Western powers rejected Soviet foreign minister Vishinsky’s plan to invite a delegation from the communist dominated German People’s Congress to the foreign ministers council. Vishinsky denounced the Western zones in Germany and his proposal followed a 22 member Soviet-occupied Germany delegation’s earlier motion.

United Mine Workers leader John L Lewis denounced state officials and coal operators for not ensuring mine safety. Extension of Farm Goods Controls Proposed by Brannan

Secretary Brannan sent a draft bill to congress to extend government control to most farm products. The plan would allow acreage allotments production goals and marketing quotas to prevent surpluses and depressed prices. It lists many commodities including livestock dairy eggs oats and citrus with possible penalties for over quota production.

State of Siege Declared in Bolivia Amid Mine Strikes

The government in Bolivia declared a state of siege as striking mine workers seized hostages and a blackout spread through the producing region. In Catavia high in the Andes, at least 27 people including two American engineers were killed in a violent weekend. The communique cited revolutionary outbreaks among tin mine strikers and blamed a right wing nationalist movement.

Pinball bells to ring again as licenses are sought in Council Bluffs. Distributors face $100 licenses. operators pay $10 for juke boxes and $50 for amusement devices. Fire Hits Searle Petroleum Firm

The Omaha fire department answered an extra alarm at the Searle Petroleum company in east Omaha Tuesday afternoon. After the initial response more units arrived, with three engines and a hook and ladder company at the refinery by 3 p.m. Heavy black smoke rolled southward over Council Bluffs as calls flooded in. some thought the smoke was a fast moving storm.

An official inquiry into the Waverly train collision last week, which killed one trainman, will open Wednesday at 9 a.m. The joint probe will involve H. A. The U S bureau of standards builds an electric brain at UCLA under Dr Harry Huskey with 20 mathematicians. It will translate foreign languages and perform 16000 additions and 4000 multiplications per second. It stores 60000 dictionary words and offers three foreign equivalents per English word. Supreme Court rules union must be notified before wage boosts

The Supreme Court held that a union must be notified prior to granting a wage increase during contract talks unless the raise is rejected by the union. Crompton-Highland Mills of Griffin Georgia raised wages 12 days after talks with the CIO, an unfair labor practice. Justice Burton delivered a unanimous opinion on the main issue, with Justices Douglas Murphy and Rutledge dissenting on procedure.
