The State Tax Commission estimated Iowa could raise about 4 million dollars annually by hiking beer and cigarette taxes or by applying a 2 percent sales tax plus a special levy on tobacco products. Director Louis H. Cook noted beer sales and yard liquor expenditures show broad revenue potential.
A spring windstorm ripped glasses from Mrs. EM M Strawhacker near New London. Days ago her son found the glasses hanging on a high tree limb. the lenses and frame remained unbroken.
The Ener Queen of Bermuda saved the entire crew of ten men from the fishing vessel Prince off Bermuda amid high winds and heavy seas. Coast Guard New York HQ received the radio alert and confirmed within 15 minutes that all crew members were rescued. the vessel reportedly attempted to launch a boat but it broke up in the rough sea.
Pacific Olive Co. of California will speak at the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner. Chamber Manager Howard Besite said 60 letters are being sent to members for the Jan. 2 event at 6 45 p.m. at the Hotel Chieftain. Richard Staufer is president elect, succeeding Carl Eckert.
Greene County Sheriff William L. Davis 45 of Jefferson died at a hospital after two months of treatment for a heart condition. He had served as sheriff since 1946. His widow and two children survive.
Objection filed to placing a bus loading zone immediately west of the Bennett Building citing hindrance to patient movement and entrance congestion. Ohio State students Sleman Slaman and Gary Haley, returning from a Rose Bowl trip, were cited after admitting they shot Texas jackrabbits. Police found a rifle, a pistol, liquor and a champagne case in their car at a Creston service station. Haley’s liquor charges were dropped. Slaman paid a $30 fine and posted $800 bond on remaining counts. The men resumed their trip to Ohio.
A new Post Office Federal Building for Council Bluffs awaits Senate Public Works Committee approval under lease purchase. Budget Bureau classed it as necessary and nine agencies have certified need, with five more required including Defense and Housing agencies. Construction could begin in 1950 with an eventual 39,853 square feet.

Ray A. Porter and O. B. Jones filed a District Court suit against the City of Council Bluffs challenging a mobile trailer parking ordinance. They seek a temporary injunction and perpetual injunction, arguing the rule against parking outside licensed camps is unconstitutional and discriminatory. They own land with mobile homes not within a licensed trailer camp and contend the ordinance deprives them of liberty and property without due process.
