Washington AP reports Secretary of Commerce Sawyer and a team of government and private economists foresee good business in the new year with a possible downturn in 1954 and a sharp test in 1955. They cite safeguards against a low mood and expect defense spending to peak late 1953 then ease to a level between 10 and 12 billion dollars, with spendable income rising about 7 percent.
General Douglas MacArthur challenged President Truman’s remark that he relieved him to avoid a wider war in the Far East.
